Blade of the Immortal – 01: Bow Down to the Blood

Epic, pure epic.

Wow. This episode just blew me away and even moments after watching it, I still found myself utterly speechless. Apparently it didn’t follow the manga correctly, but even so, I whole-heartedly enjoyed this episode and so it definitely makes it the best anime this season (so far, anyway). This anime was also the one I was looking the most forward to watching, so it definitely didn’t leave me feeling the slightest bit disappointed. Despite being extremely confusing and all mumble-jumble, I was still intrigued by the quality of the artwork and the amount of blood that was presented. I’m hoping that this will be a series that is somewhat akin to Baccano! in terms of being able to captivate an audience by perplexing them, and leave dying-to-know questions hanging until the last minute.

Regarding the opening theme, I loved the visuals while the song only manages to pass my standards, while the ending theme, on the other hand, was so horrible that I didn’t even bother listening to all of it. Besides the visuals also looking nice, they were basically just sceneries like they had in Ryoko’s Case File. I like the idea of worms being inside Manji’s body because it’s original. Usually, elixirs or alchemy are required in order to grant one’s invincibility, and yet I still enjoy that typical storyline. In any case, the man that killed the girl, who wishes to avenge her father’s death, is gorgeous, so his looks and personality makes up for Manji’s GAR character (only some GAR characters are cool, but most of them suck).

Anyway, the action was pretty much horrible because you barely got to see Manji slit anyone’s throat or stab anyone in the heart, and the “angle of the camera” wasn’t moving to the fast-paced movement like what happened in the first episode of SOUL EATER between Soul and Maka’s battle with the demon. I mean, I think the opening theme had even better action than the episode overall, but it was still a pleasing sight when Manji pierced the priest’s head during confession. I was squealing at all the blood that was dripping. I don’t give a shit who’s voicing who because I’ve never paid much attention to seiyuus – to me, they’re just essentially there. Machi’s tale was upsetting too, since Manji killed her husband right before her very eyes. And like I’ve mentioned somewhere else before, I just love tragic love stories. Since this episode was awfully good, I’m definitely following this series and I suppose I’ll drop Someday’s Dreamers after all because of its lack to entertain me as much as Blade of the Immortal.

i like this one too… though it’s a little too dark, even after adjusting my monitor’s brightness thing, to appreciate the fight scenes. the OP and ED sequences are awesome but i didn’t like either music.

In no possible way can this be compared to Baccano!! There were good things but also HORRIBLE things and stuff that was just plain, like you say, confusing. And the OP was the best thing about the whole show.

total shit, as expected from fucking Bee Train. Blade is pretty much ONLY good for it’s action – the story is pretty much lulz kill random bad guys lulz lots of womenz get raped. if you ruin the action, the plot is meaningless, and viola, bad.

I’ve only skimmed through the raw when it first came out and must admit it was better than what I’d give Beetrain credit for. Now if we’ve got real subs(AEN doesn’t count) for it.

It kind of reminds me of Hellsing with lots of bloodshed and mindless violence.
I’ll give this a try before I decide whether to follow or to drop it.

PS: Yes Someday’s Dreamers is boring, you should’ve dropped it long ago.

NO. BEE TRAIN. THEY HAVE NEVER MADE A GOOD ACTION SCENE EVER.

words of an idiot who probably didn’t watch the wonderful first season.

I have to agree with 21stcentury here, Beetrain isn’t known for making good action shows. Murder Princess, another show that was supposed to be high on action fell short of expectations because the action sequences weren’t up to par. While Blade’s production values look pretty good, it’s pointless when the action is just sort of ‘meh’.

I was also kinda disappointed by the action scenes. I know that early antagonists are essentially fodder scrubs, but the episode was not very exciting.

Considering this is an action from BeeTrain, I’m not going to hold my breath. But I’ll give it 3 eps before making a decision.

For some reason i can click on the pictures? Great job on the blog for this episode. I just wish there were more pictures of the episodes like on Omni’s website. The reason why i’m saying this is because i go to a art class on Thursdays and before i go there, i save the pictures into a folder, but before i save it i take a look at the picture. If i see that the picture is small i won’t save it. =)

    (Keep up the great work)

@ Fire Candy and Shin Getter Robo:

lols, well, besides being lazy, I’m also capped right now and I’ve always thought that if you wanted big images, all you’d have to do is go to Omni, but seeing as he doesn’t seem to blogging these series, I might make the images linkable from now on

  • RHO said:

I love the manga, and i’m sad people think this series is just mindless violence – maybe they haven’t read the manga.
I do agree that the action is almost non-existent, except for in the OP and the confession booth scene, which is too bad. The fact that most of the scenes happened in the dark was also too bad. Hopefully the following episodes will keep with the story-telling quality of the manga.

  • Fire Candy said:

What do you mean by “linkable”?

  • blissmo (author) said:

    @Fire Candy:

When you click on the images, you’ll be able to see the larger version of the image. That’s what I meant.
