Monsters!!

Summary:

During a motorcycling race in which the invincible champion ‘The White Wind’ Gerd Frentzen is leading the race, a mysterious woman with white boots steps away from what seems to be an innocent ambulance. But the back doors of the ambulance suddenly open and the alarm goes off, two policemen who are near to the ambulance investigate the vehicle and find a naked woman who is apparently sleeping under a white sheet in the back of the ambulance. When one of the policemen looks at the ECG, he notices that the naked woman has no pulse and is therefore death. Because the ambulance immediately becomes a crime scene due to the woman’s death, the two men decide to take the ambulance to the police office. While they are still on their way to the police office, the naked woman suddenly starts gathering scalpels and transforms into a Demoniac. Slicing one policemen’s throat open, the blue Demoniac grabs the dead policemen’s gun and kills the other one who’s driving the ambulance and calls assistance from XAT through the radio. Meanwhile the race is still going on and it seems that Gerd Frentzen is forced to abandon his leading position. But out of the blue the ambulance, which is hijacked by the blue Demoniac, rides through the fence of the circuit, throws some bikers of their motors and finally crashes into the pit area…

As the thick black smoke starts clearing up, an astonished audience and the racers see a Demoniac coming out of the smoke. The Demoniac immediately starts shooting around with the gun it got from the dead policeman. Gerd Frentzen who’s close to the monsters decides to take action and kicks the Demoniac on the ground. But as the Demoniac tries to get up and shoot Gerd it is suddenly sliced in two by another black Demoniac who seems to protect the other people. Right in front of the eyes of Gerd the badly hurt Demoniac suddenly fuses with a motorcycle and starts riding. Meanwhile XAT arrives at the scene and sends out men who ride on special motorbikes. Even though the reinforcement of XAT, the blue demoniac which fused with a motor is still rampaging the circuit killing numerous of XAT forces and motorcyclists. When it appears that Gerd is the next one who’s going to get killed, the protective Demoniac once again saves the life of Gerd by blocking the monster’s claws with some kind of saber beam. A battle begins between the two Demoniac and it quickly becomes obvious that the blue Demoniac is no match for the black one as its being decapitated and stabbed in the back. Meanwhile Gerd falls of his bike and has a serious accident…

A month later, Gerd, whose legs are permanently paralyzed due to the accident, wakes up in an hospital and sees Hermann sitting next to his bed. As Gerd don’t see the use to live due to the fact that he can’t ride a bike anymore, Hermann becomes angry and reminds Gerd of the words he once said to Hermann: There’s always a way to go on living how hopeless it might be. Apparently Hermann was once a teammate of Gerd but was fired because a new talent Igor had more potential than he had. But Hermann isn’t angry at Gerd, in fact he’s glad that he stopped racing as he has finally found something where he’s very good in: being a member of XAT. As Hermann walks out of the room with the promise that he’ll be back, we meet Herman’s partner: the gorgeous pink-haired Amanda. As they both leave the hopital, a mysterious black-haired man is staring at the door of the room of Gerd Frentzen. When Amanda and Hermann enters the headquarters of XAT (which looks like a church…), we hear some more information about Demoniacs which are called Amalgams by XAT. It looks like Amalgams are created when corpses suddenly starts moving and gathering materials around them, they also tend to attack people almost immediately after their ‘creation’. Why certain corpses do that and others just stay dead like they are supposed to do is unknown to XAT. Suddenly the Amalgam which terrorized the race track a month ago is traced by XAT in Lathen Warehouse area. Meanwhile Gerd tries to contact his girlfriend Jil while a suspicious green-haired female doctor Beatrice Grese observes Gerd’s medical data. XAT is immediately at the scene and investigates the hangar where the Demoniac had hide itself for some time. But as there are no traces for the current position of the Demoniac, XAT decides to wait for the next move of the monster. A XAT member sees a mysterious man between two buildings and Amanda gets send out to ask the stranger if he saw the Demoniac. But when Amanda arrives at the place, the stranger suddenly disappears into thin air.

When Hermann visits Gerd the next day, he finds an empty bed and Gerd in his wheelchair who’s ready to leave the hospital and who seems to have overcome his little depression. A happy Hermann assists his friend and sees him driving away into a car. Gerd decides to make a quick stop at his team’s headquarters to see if he can have a small job with his former team because after all he was the invincible champion for a very long time. But when he arrives it seems that there is no place for a disabled motorcyclist like him. Disappointed in his team, Gerd tries to go home but it briskly stopped by the green-haired doctor Beatrice Grese. She gives Gerd a dangerous pill which can make Gerd’s biggest dream: ‘Riding a bike once again’ come true. But the pill is still experimental and can kill Gerd as well! When Gerd comes home he’s just in time to hear Jil talking through the telephone’s answering machine. She says that she isn’t strong enough to walk next to Gerd in this period. Feeling dumped, a devastated and crying Gerd laughs in sadness…

Meanwhile the Demoniac has made its appearance once again in the Lathen Warehouse area. But this time XAT is ready for it. Two well hidden snipers are watching every move the Demoniac moving make and is waiting for the right moment to take the evil creature out. As it suddenly stops on top of some sort of construction, the XAT takes action and sends in an unmanned car with a big bomb in it. As the car stops right under the Demoniac, the snipers shoot the Demoniac’s two legs off the creature and the Demoniac falls into the car. But when XAT tries to blow it up, the plan suddenly fails because the bomb doesn’t go off! The Demoniac has fused itself with the timer and has stopped it at precisely twenty milliseconds. Trying to escape, the Demoniac fuses with the car and drives away from the snipers. Luckily XAT has a back-up plan and sends out Hermann and Amanda armed with missiles on their bike to take out the Demoniac. As Hermann fires two missiles from behind and Amanda fires one from the front, the car explodes and the Demoniac is believed to be dead. A few miles away from the scene, a strange man stands on a mountain observing XAT and the Demoniac while a mysterious motorbike rides on the road next to the mountain to the scene. When Hermann and Amanda step off from their bike to confirm the death of the Demoniac, everything goes wrong. The Demoniac is still alive, it captures Amanda and threats to blow up itself and Amanda with the explosives from the car (which are still fused in the Demoniac). As Hermann has no choice to lay down his gun, suddenly another Demoniac arrives at the scene and cuts off the arm of Demoniac where the explosion timer was fused to. Trying to escape from the new threat, the Demoniac jumps on a building but is easily killed by the new Demoniac. When this Demoniac jumps down from the building and stands next to Amanda and Hermann, it transforms into Gerd…

The episode ends with the suspicious doctor Beatrice who stands right behind the truck of XAT and who wears the same boots as the woman who stepped away from the ambulance seconds before the dead woman transformed into a Demoniac. Is this woman the cause for the many accidents and deaths the Demoniac has caused?

Thoughts:

I liked this episode very much. Like in the trailer the animation and characters designs are smooth and from high quality. In my personal opinion this anime has all the ingredients: Lots of action, good animation and an interesting plot. Especially the plots interests me now… I really don’t know what to think of the green-haired doctor. Is she behind the corpses which transforms into Demoniacs or is she just observing? On one hand I think she’s like with the “bad guys” but on the other hand she really helped Gerd by handing over that pill. She really intrigues me so I hope she gets a lot of attention. I think the mysterious looking men (first in the hospital, in the Warehouse area and on that mountain) are the humans who are able to transform into a Demoniac at will and who protected Gerd from getting hurt. I feel like I’ve got a certain bond with Gerd already because I know first hand what it is to lose the ability to practice the sport you love, luckily with me it’s temporal xD. So I understand why he probably took the pill and I would have make the same choice as well. But I don’t think it was a great move from Gerd to transform back into a human right in front of XAT members, now he has to answer a LOT of questions and probably gets arrested. But maybe he hasn’t got the transformation thing under control, who knows? In the previews of the next episode it’s clear that Gerd is going to have to fight the Demoniac that saved him in the race track and that he’s going to have some trouble with accepting his other identity…

To conclude: I love Blassreiter already and I hope its storyline is going to keep intriguing me until the very end!
