Eve no Jikan – 01: Androids Have Feelings Too!

Just … epic …
I noticed a lot of recent posts in the aniblogosphere about a show entitled Eve no Jikan, but dismissed the idea of watching it since I had initially assumed it was a movie, but after discovering it was an ONA that runs for only fifteen minutes, I just had to join in the fun. Plot-wise, it’s a rather common sci-fic tale of androids mingling with humans. Although this basic summary already seems to make the entire series a potential failure, the beautiful artwork and peculiar background music are immensely intriguing. In addition, the characters all quite fascinating and are more or so ideally realistic. This episode was truly captivating; it was so simple, yet deep, meaningful and expressive.
When I realized that Rikuo had an android maid living with him and his family, along with the given impression that he could become a dori-kei anytime soon, I was suddenly reminded of a series called Absolute Boyfriend. Where AB is about a girl falling in love with a male robot, I have a hunch that Eve no Jikan will take an entirely different route — perhaps, in this world, the existence of androids will come to an end after a compelling (hopefully, compelling) political war, or these robots will learn to live and think like humans do and eventually turn against their own creators, hence the result of a waging war between two kinds of humans: the breathing and non-breathing.
Despite those awful cliché suggestions I mentioned, I can’t imagine any bloodshed in this series, but nevertheless, I feel that it will be an extremely profound series. Although Akiko and Rikuo’s android are robots with “no feelings,” I can’t help but pity the poor machines. The way the owners treat their robots perked my interest as well, since each individual treated their android differently, be it carelessly or sympathetically, like our good man Rikuo. In this era, humans are so advanced in technology that they created these robots to look exactly like people, and in order to differ the two “species,” androids are ordered to have rings floating above their heads. I’m curious as to why humans went so far as to create “another of their kind,” and hopefully, this question will be answered later on in the series.
In any case, I’ll definitely be following this series and blogging it whenever I get the chance.

Screenshot 3, third guy on the right, is my Anime doppelganger. He looks exactly like I do in real life, suit and tie included, that’s my school uniform. Same haircut too, it’s so accurate it’s creepy!
Dude, Japanese Animation stole me as a character design!

Okay blissmo, I’ll trust your recommendation and catch this series. I should be able to do with a series that has little or no bloodshed.

15 minutes goes by fast ^^ EnJ has nice potential. Caffeinated Akiko made me O_O
Saw the trailer a while back and it looks like something I could enjoy, though it’s usually the female who’s the robot.

I wasn’t even thinking about war till you mentioned it
Anyways, it was really intersting, and even though I predcicted the WHAT A TWIST moment, it was still handled so well that it made an impact. Music’s definitely the highlight though.

I saw the trailer as well before, and the preview looked fantastic. Also read about it on another blog, forgot where, so I am definitely going to pick this up. WTF war.
ZOMG, sounds so Animatrix: The Second Renaissance. Sans the war, broken bones, severed heads and crushed bodies.
Time to go check it outtttt.

Somehow, this reminded me of the Mizu no Kotoba OAV with the cafe scene and the robotics…
And you’re probably right. There seems to be no bloodshed or any of that thriller nonsense like the Animatrix. Probably going to stick with the philosophical stuff differentiating between androids and humans… which is nice

Caffeinated Akiko made me O_O <– AKIKO WAS AWESOME. I’m totally a fanboy. I’ll definitely be watching this too.

I like this show, the first episode was interesting, if a bit weak. Shame none of the good groups have picked it up. I spotted some flaws in the fansubs and i suck at japanese. Plus they didnt even mux the ass file, only takes like 30seconds to do
Going to be interesting to see how this plays out, though i have a good idea already after watching the first.
animation looks nice and everyone seems to be raving about this. though i find the thought of robots (eh… again?) iffy. but i’ll give it a looksie when my download completes

@Blankita
I think it depends on how you look at it, if you see them as simply as being robots, then i guess it will suck a bit. But if you look at them as androids it takes on a different meaning. Especially since they’re seemingly becoming sentient in this series I don’t think the series is going to be great, and definatly not something to rave about IMO, though it is one of the better shows so far this season (which just shows what a crap season we’ve got lol)
I think i’ve only watching one, maybe two shows from this season, most of the anime i’m watching comes from last season, or the season before. Hasn’t been anything in while though that made me stop and watch.

@Tiamet’s Disciple: I agree, androids seem to be different, and even the name itself sounds a hell lot better than robots. I’ve never followed much anime to begin with, so I might just follow two shows as well, only CODE GEASS R2 and Macross F don’t count! XD Also, I didn’t notice anything wrong with the subs and my Japanese skills suck! Which means, you ARE good at Japanese
@blissmo
Guess who’s lack of knowledge about the show got him an updated, improved version of the subs later

I think there’s officially enough recommendations for this now that I’d be silly to not spend 15 minutes on it. After all, I spend 24 minutes a week on Kyouran Kazoku Nikki…
Sounds like an indie show.
Thank for recommending this one! It’s definitely a watch!

The animation and sound are indeed great but it is the realistic feel that has captivated me. It doesn’t feel like the other sci-fis but has this realistic touch to it, the way people move and act. Feels so much more plausible than the so many other copy-cat series.
