GA-REI -zero- 04: Really Should’ve Taken The Chainsaw.

They work better against zombies. And surely none of us belong to that world either.
Summary:
Taking off from where we left last week, Kagura is called to work once more during class time just as she’s about to lend her friends her notes from English. When the team arrives at their destination, Yomi reassures Kagura that as soon as she masters Michael 12, she can fight as the “main character.” With the others as back-up, Yomi easily defeats the Category B monster but it is Kagura who rescues the life of a nearby civilian. Realizing that she can see these demons, Yomi takes the woman elsewhere to sign a few papers and takes the sleeping pills hidden in her handbag, explaining that life is more valuable than it seems. Once the woman is out of earshot, Kagura questions how Yomi knows what situation the woman is in, and then she learns that from despair and suicide attempts, the Category D creatures are born from humans.

OP: “Paraside Lost” by Minori Chihara
At school the following day, Kagura’s two friends thank her for helping them previously and awes at how she manages to finish her school work while living such a busy lifestyle. In the gym when Kagura is cleaning her sword, she is suddenly interrupted by a man who goes by the name Michael. Yomi pops in and introduces him as the blacksmith of Kagura’s sword, as well as many of the defense equipments the team uses. Michael studies Yomi’s blade and tells her that it needs refinement, so Yomi won’t be able to fight with her beast for a while. Due to this, Yomi chooses a temporary weapon and decides to test it out with her fiance, but Noriyuki makes an excuse to spend time with Kazuki instead. Elsewhere, Yomi practices aiming with the iron. When she gets the hang of it, both her and Kagura are called to investigate a site.

ED: “Yume no Ashioto ga Kikoeru” by Mizuhara Kaoru
The pair make haste towards the danger zone only to be ambushed by an army of Category D creatures. For a while, Yomi and Kagura manage to fend off their enemies until demented humans stagger in their direction. Yomi demands that Kagura cut them down immediately since they are no longer humans, but knowing that one of them is the woman she saved yesterday, Kagura can’t bring herself to attack. Just as she’s about to get attacked, a golden blade soars from out of no where and destroys the monster. As it turns out, Kagura’s father has arrived and he uses Ga-Rei, the most powerful beast, to consume all the monsters. After the battle is finished, outside Kagura’s father punishes her by hitting her arm with the sheathe. Before leaving, he tells her to become strong.
Thoughts:

An iron? Seriously? You chose an iron over a chainsaw, Yomi? If you didn’t become a crazy demonic sword wielding psycho in the future, I may have lost some respect for you. The OP pretty much shows a grand total of 1 character we haven’t seen so far (miko spear wielder?) and other than that it’s quite good, but what disppoints me is the fact we seem to have completely forgotten about the cast in the first episode. There isn’t even a hint of them in the OP, and that entire episode seemed to hint towards past events which I assumed we’d be taken a look at by now. The series looks like it’s going to focus completely on Kagura and Yomi and their lesbian antics, which means no more screentime for motorcycle martial arts which is a damn shame.

I would be pleasantly surprised as well.

Unlike Impz, I’m not so much RAGING at the differences in the show as I am confused and disappointed by them. The action was still good, and the music was stellar, but the shift into comedy and the increase in yuri just feels awkward at this point. Naked MANLY MEN, spirit boliers and random shower scenes (horribly censored by the way) aren’t what I expected from this show. I’m not all that displeased, but overall it just feels like I was cheated out of my dark, gory, foreboding anime and given a high-school demon killing romp instead.

So yeah, the actual episode was kind of sparse in terms of information, except for the fact Noriyuki’s Yomi’s fiancee and he’s scared of her eloping with Kagura and Kagura has a bee in her bonnet about killing zombies who used to be human which she obviously get’s over in the future through HARD WORK AND GUTS. Then there’s the appearance of the Ga-Rei, Byakuei who’s great demon exterminating power is devouring Casshern.

Sensing some sort of discrepency here…

No she was there, I think episode 3 where Yomi’s papa had the family meeting, she was sitting beside him. I liked the episode, it rings of sentiment and things that won’t last, allowing the viewer to feel the flush of demon girl coming.
I can’t verify it, but that just how it feels.
I agree. I prefer the setting, mood and premise(?) of the first episode. I was pretty much disappointed when I saw the second. I really like Yomi but I’m tired of characters like Kagura. Also, I’m not sure if it’s just me but it seems like the quality of the animation changed from the first episode to the second/third. I haven’t watched the 4th yet to judge.
Bring back Squad 4! I like Natsuki :3
I also enjoyed this episode and I have a feeling that Gai Rei Zero maybe the biggest surprise of the season. Your last part “from this … to this …” actrually drives the point home. It has me thinking, “what happened to Yomi? Why would she turn on Kagura?”
And we find out Noriyuki is Yomi’s fiance in episode 2.
It’s becoming more and more enjoyable to watch, the way I see it. Yuri + Incest = WIN!!!
I totally with you regarding Yomi’s choice of weapon. Seriously, why TEH iron instead of the chainsaw! On the usual basis, a chainsaw would have been more powerful than an iron with or without special water.
@Ryan A
I wouldn’t be nearly as annoyed if the series had started out this way, and though I can understand them wanting to create such an atmosphere to make future events feel all the mroe saddening and/or confusing , it’s just too much of a jarring difference for me to like immediately.
@char
Yomi is win \m/
@Cokematic
See @Ryan A.
@Rakuen
It’s not really incest, but still mmmm delicious yuri.
@Hynavian
Too many zombie movies have been made for people not to realise that a chainsaw is better than a steaming implement.
I believe that the miko spear wielder was Kagura’s mother, the person her father held in his arms at the beginning of episode 3. And frankly, the cast in the first episode is probably a fun rickroll.
That being said, because we’re in prequel mode right now, we’ll probably see those chaps again, so don’t worry about it. I also didn’t think that this anime would be all serious business, so I’m glad to see it lighten up with some humor. :3
urgh… hate fanservice
That woman with the spear isn’t Kagura’s mother, as you see her in the third episode, sitting with those elders with Yomi’s dad introducing himself. Unless she was a ghost or something. I wonder if Squad 4 will show up at any point in this flashback.

Allegra cheap
mmm theres no discrepancy with the two images you pointed out…the first ep with the martial arts/ motorbike was a pesent day event….whereas the following eps are all flashbacks and background info..which leads to the later episodes that jump back to the present day style of the first one.
