Macross Frontier – 04

You will always win Miss Macross for me, Ranka!

Summary:

Alto is in the process of training to become a pilot while Michel gives him a hard time. The other members of the military note how cool the new recruit is as they stand by and watch Alto travel by wearing an extremely heavy suit. Later on, Ranka texts him a message about her joining the Miss Macross contest. She expresses how much she hopes for him to be there so that she may preserver. Ozma enters the locker room after Luca and Michel find out about Ranka signing up for the competition and he informs them that on the same day the Miss Macross contest takes place, they have an operation to execute. Of course, Luca is about to protest this idea but Michel shuts him up, since they don’t want Ozma learning about Ranka competing for the Miss Macross title.
Meanwhile, Ranka visits the building in order to prepare but finds that she can’t fit in. She’s about to quit when Alto replies to her message earlier, saying that he wishes her the best. Just then, Sheryl appears and Ranka finds the motivation to win again. The competition starts and when Ranka comes on stage to do her little walk performance, she spots Alto and obtains confidence for the rest of the show. After a while, however, Alto gets a special call to go on a mock exam and pass his entry in order to gain a position in the SMS. Although reluctant, Alto goes anyway and sees his father walk into the building where the Miss Macross competition is currently being held.
Ranka enters the stage once more to sing but realizes that Alto is no longer present. Saddened but still determined to show off her talent, Ranka sings while Alto is participating in his mock exam. Unfortunately, the Victor aka Vajra appears. Michel and Luca order him to retreat but Alto remembers that it was this creature that obliterated Ranka’s entire family. Angered by the thought of this, Alto manages to defeat the Victor, thus passing his entrance exam. When the group return to the spaceship, Alto is introduced to a female giant called Klan and at the same time, Sheryl is about to announce the winner for Miss Macross.
During the reviewing period, however, Cathy notes something suspicious about Leon as he, too, is one of the judges. Michel, Luca and Alto go out to Nyan Nyan to eat. Klan tags along as well, but instead of being a giant, she’s now in the form of a little kid. Alto finds out from Ranka who’s serving them as a waitress that she didn’t win. This, however, will not stop her from singing. The next morning, Alto walks to school when he’s suddenly tripped by Sheryl, who greets him with a cheeky aura around her.
Thoughts:
Honestly, I don’t have much to say about Macross Frontier so far overall, except that each episode continues to deliver more interesting matters into the situation. Still a little confused from not watching the first episode (and I still don’t plan to), but I think I’m getting the hang of all this mecha stuff. I thought it was extremely cute when Ranka hit her head on the microphone and she really did feel out of place when she met all those “beautiful” women. I think Leon had something to do with Ranka not winning the competition, which was also implied when he kept staring at her data and Cathy gave him this look that said “I know you’re up to something.” What’s wrong with Ranka being Miss Macross anyway? Maybe she’s just too cute, lols. So anyway, the action was pretty decent and it was awesome how the Vajra or Victor blew up like that. It was like another Big Bang thing, and how cool was that dead guy floating in space? Ranka’s singing was also nice but I didn’t really like the song. It sure made sense with that Alto was doing. Still not sure whether this is a series worth following since I’m not too into mecha anime, but the story’s becoming more deep and the characters are becoming more interesting.

those so called “beautiful women” are all sluts and deserve to die. Ranka must have lost because one the winner slept with a few of the judges to sway their votes. I wish them a happy life filled with AIDS and all other STDs. Burn in hell for not picking Ranka, just burn.
Don’t like the mechas? You’ve still got the boobs! Awesome!
^ Lawl @ Setsuna, angry fanboy is angry.
The judges simply do not comprehend the greatness that is Delicious Flat Chests.
@Setsuna-san: LOL! That is all.
@Runningkid: Haha, yay for boobs
@Shin: I know~~!
LOL at some of these above comments!
I believe the reason that they keep referring the Vajra as “Victor” is because they are using the phonetic alphabet. It is a code, so that those who overhear will not immediately know what the pilots are talking about. This is to prevent the public (who do not know about the Vajra) and anime bloggers from finding out about the Vajra and looking up information, should the conversation be overheard.
Macross has never really been a strictly mecha show. In fact, the Valkyries almost always spend more time in plane mode than robot mode. Then again, it’s never been strictly a boob show either, and there certainly was a lot of jigglage here.
@Kabitzin I assumed that’s what it was as well, as it’s much easier to say HEY, “V” AND WHATNOT YALL WINK WINK than have to explain what a Vajra is.
At times I feel like the World’s Only Macross Fanboy and they’re doing some of these things just for me, like putting Lynn Minmei’s song “My Boyfriend Is A Pilot” in the episode. But surely there are more of us out there.
The song that Ranka sings, “My Boyfriend is a Pilot” is actually VERY significant.
In the original Macross TV series, it was the song that Lynn Minmay sang during the final Earth-Zentradi war.
It has later been referred to as “the song that ended the war” in the Macross 7 TV series.
So, while you or I may not personally like the song that much, within the Macross universe, the humans and Zentradi consider the song legendary, a classic, etc etc.
Note: In the Macross 7 TV series, they denote (via discussion by the Macross 7 bridge crew) that the Macross: Do You Remember Love (Ai Oboetemasu ka?) movie is purely that…. a movie.
So, the canon is…
Macross TV series
Macross Plus OAV series
Macross 7 TV series (and related OAVs)
Macross Frontier TV series
Whereas….
Macross II never existed
Macross: Do You Remember Love movie was a movie that the Macross 7 bridge crew had watched.
Getting back to my point, because the movie was considered just a movie, the song used in the movie for the final Earth-Zentradi battle, “Do You Remember Love (Ai Oboetemasu Ka)” is not the offical “song that ended the war”. The movie just happened to use that song instead of the original, official song “My Boyfriend is a Pilot” that actually used in canon.
