Macross Frontier – 06

Damn you, Alto!
How should I put this …? I haven’t seen the first episode because I’m too lazy to, so finding out that the characters are actually living on a ship is pretty “wow” to me. Anyway, let me start off with a question: why the hell did Alto lie about being alone in the mall? I mean, it could’ve been just an instinctive reply (I know – I do it all the time), but I highly doubt it. He obviously cares a lot about Sheryl and has probably developed some romantic feelings for her (he’s blushing most of the time when he’s around her), but he also cares about Ranka too. And what is up with his attitude when Nanase proposed a Ranka fan club? He seemed so reluctant and bored stiff that I really wanted to punch his face or do what I usually do to my bunny friends. Poor Ranka as well, but Michel shouldn’t have just called Alto stupid – he should’ve – ah, I should stop resorting to violence. He should’ve calmly told Alto that Ranka had seen Sheryl kiss him good-bye during their “date” and explain that Ranka likes him. Er, nope, that doesn’t feel right, so I suppose we can just go back to shoving one of his paper airplanes down his throat.
On the other hand, perhaps he just didn’t want Ranka to think that he was seeing someone because he knows she has this “not-so-obvious” major crush on him? I never liked the way Alto looked anyway – much too feminine for my liking and too much hime-ness for me to handle. Besides, Ranka seemed really depressed throughout this episode, even after this old man opened a singing career for her. From the start when all her friends gathered around her to cheer her on, she still seemed upset and that’s probably because of what she witnessed the other day. And then Alto doesn’t admit to her truthfully that he had been out with Sheryl … just made her day a hell lot worse. Now, Ranka constantly blushes when she’s around Alto, which implies that she has feelings for him, and so yes, this has developed into some sort of love triangle between those three.
I really enjoyed Sheryl’s song, especially because it suited really well with the things that were intersecting. I must admit that she looked really strange in this episode, I mean, they all did – their faces and eyes mostly. I get this feeling that Alto will choose Sheryl in the end and that Ranka will be a sacrifice or something, or she’ll eventually get kidnapped.
Sadly enough, I even sense a Ranka death coming, although it’s still far too early in the series to jump to conclusions. I see Ranka’s role somewhat similar to Noe’s from true tears. She’s like the friend, but she understands certain areas better than normal people and will be the one to lead Alto in the right path. Also, her singing which causes the Vajra to react means that she’s special – at least, in this case, much more special than Sheryl will ever be *insert evil laughter here*. Sorry, I love Sheryl but Ranka stands out more from my perspective. But like I mentioned in my other post, as much as I hope for Alto to end up with Ranka, the pairing I root for never turn out the way I plan it to. So … there is NO hope for all those AltoxRanka fans! NO HOPE AT ALL!!!
Macross Frontier is beginning to become more interesting, despite me not knowing or comprehending anything the characters’ say that involve military drama. I did learn that Luca calls his ship Johanna or something, but that’s only because I read off Kabitzin’s post before watching the episode itself. As for Alto – well, for lying to Ranka like that, I guess he deserves a HUGE ASS punishment, like a hanging, or possibly, a bullet through his head? What do you think? And I’m still confused as to how Alto gets all this paper from. What – he magically conjures it on his own from thin air? As for Ozma, I’m glad he allowed Ranka into the singing thing, and that he’s finally realizing she can make her own choices. So next week is probably going to concentrate on laser shit and flying in space because they want to. And Sheryl and Ranka may encounter each other – w00t! Another Hiromi and Noe catfight!

I just realized that maybe Alto thinks it’s ok to lie to Ranka because everyone else does. Ozma did it for years. Maybe it’s not as big a deal as we think…
The scene at the meal/get-together where Alto had yet another paper airplane made me rage. Why does he always have paper to make these airplanes???
Sheryl \o/!! There seems to be all these speculation as to who is going to die, I think we should focus more on the fanboying for now! SHERYL!!
LIES there is always hope for AltoXRanka fans!!!
On the other hand i shed tears when sheryl sang. It was really melancholic.
@Kabitzin: But of course. Wasting trees is fun.
@Runningkid: I don’t like Sheryl! RANKA WIN!
@Setsuna-san: No, there doesn’t. Haha, you cried? Yeah, I agree it was really nice
Where can I order some Ranka fanclub merchandise. I will pay good money for a Rankaphone.
Anyway in all seriousness, it’s hard to dislike Sheryl now after this episode, not to mention the poignant moment towards the end during her concert. That said, I’m still rooting for Ranka all the way. ZETTAI KATSU!
@Shin: And I hope you do, cos I’m all the way for Ranka too!
I don’t think Ranka is as weak as most people think. In fact, I think she is the queen of the hive—those monsters are here to serve her, not to hurt her. It’s pretty obvious already that they respond to her voice. And don’t forget in episode 1 where the first Vajra was approaching her in an inquisitive and nonviolent manner, as if it was trying to bow to her.
Can you imagine the possible drama, when Alto has to destroy Ranka in order to settle the Vajra from destroying Macross Frontier fleet?
@bakaneko: That would be awesome
