Macross Frontier – 11: Love Gone Wrong

*criiiiiiiiiiiiies*

So overall, this episode wasn’t so bad and unforunately, we didn’t get to see any mecha action either. The only action we got was learning more about our wonderful characters Alto and Ranka. Ranka’s fame increased dramatically thanks to that one movie and I loved listening to that Nyan Nyan song. Ranka definitely spends less time with her friends now that she’s so famous, but at least they still keep in touch from time to time. Ranka seriously needs to become more fierce if she wants to win against Sheryl for Alto-hime’s love. In the meantime, Alto just seems clueless to it all and he should’ve stayed for Ranka’s cookies of love instead, but noooooo, he wanted to “fly” when he’s flown so many times before.

I have no idea what is going to happen next in Macross Frontier and I remember not liking it so much at the beginning of the series since it was mostly about the mecha, Vajra, action and fighting, but now there’s a lot of love going on as well now, which might imply that Ranka’s love for Alto and his feelings for her in return may result in huge consequences in the future. I get this feeling that some time Ranka or Sheryl is going to die, but then again, I just love it when main characters die.

Alto-hime is probably the only one who doesn’t care what happens to Sheryl’s boobs

So Alto ditched Ranka to hang out with Sheryl, and apparently it was actually a scheme to lure Alto into a trap. Well, serves him right for leaving Ranka, but at least he had Michel inform her. I can understand that Alto loves flying and that perhaps what made him choose to go with Sheryl instead is because he wants to prove to Nii-san that his dream is to fly and not act.

Oh, lookie, I have a never-ending stash of papers up my ass

We get to see more of Alto’s past, but sadly, we still don’t know how he conjures up all those papers to make his airplanes. He was pretty cute as well, and I think it was his mother who told him blah blah blah about being able to fly. And he looks so happy here.

It’s the rarest Pokemon

This green-squishy-bubbly thing is too cute. I wonder if it has some connection with the Vajra, or with Brera himself and that’s why it continues to follow Ranka. The red gem on its head probably holds some significance as well, and I get this feeling that it will someday save Ranka.

DoTA is extremely addicting

And high-schoolers love it

Cathy’s quite a dirty woman, trying to look to sneak a peak at Klan’s breasts

Klan and Cathy had some important discussion, but I lost track of what they were going on about half-way. Shortie Klan is definitely a cute. Grace and Leon also have this secret business going on that has something to do with Alto, of course, and I think Ranka as well and Brera. They’re probably trying to search for a reason behind the several Vajra attack and have already theororized that it has something to do with Ranka, and now they need to know what makes Ranka’s voice call to them. I don’t know, but I suppose it’s something like that, or perhaps they’re just having fun ruining Ranka’s day.

Funny, I thought it would be the reverse: the ones who can see help the blind

So the ol’ man is dying and if Alto visits him on his birthday then the geezer will accept Alto as his son again. I don’t like Yotsuba (is that even his name? can’t remember) because he’s kindaa creepy and also rather hideous lols. Usually 24/7 smiling guys are cute, but this one ain’t.

Are you in dire need for someone to help you with your love life?

Yes, I’d like you to make Alto visit me at Clark Cliff, please!

Why, of course, that can be arranged *cough cough*

So I don’t know if Sheryl intentionally meant to call Alto and meet her up on the same day Ranka was planning on meeting him, and I suppose she used his passion for flying to her advantage by giving him the description of a “vast and limitless sky.” She’s cool and lovable, but she’s also really hard to understand because she’s so cheery sometimes, and it’s pretty obvious that she holds feelings for Alto, and like Shirukii mentioned, she’s always so flirtacious. She helps Ranka and yet does things behind her back.

The new ED song (it’s new, right?) was awesome, and I’m so happy that Ranka sings it. I loved the extra Ranka images they added at the end.

Honestly, I got so pissed every time Sheryl met up with Alto. I’m glad that the green-bubbly creature appeared once more to comfort Ranka and I thought that Ranka was just going to give Alto a ticket to her concert, and the airplane cookies made me so hungry. It was such a sweet gift too! I’m extremely relieved that this episode focused a lot on Ranka and her new life-style too.

Next week looks like there’s going to be loads of mecha action and I am thrilled that Ranka will also be in it. I’d shoot Sheryl for stealing Alto, and Grace and Leon for their “everything went according to plan.” I had hoped that Brera and Ranka wouldn’t be siblings, but nothing’s wrong with a dose of anime incest love.

    I have some suspicions about Sheryl’s recent behavior, but suffice to say her resolve to claim Alto-hime has only grown with the passage of time. While Alto-hime treats Sheryl like a kinder gentler woman version of Mikhail, Sheryl might have first seen alto-hime as a friend, but as time went on she developed a soft spot for hime. Sheryl wants to encourage Ranka yes, but telling Ranka to back off from alto-hime would do massive damage to Ranka’s fragile self esteem. Thus far Ranka has not take decisive action and only has one bold maneuver to her credit.

    Well Ranka still has fifteen more eps to become a woman and claim her hime. i just hope that if/when that happens Ranka will want more than hime’s attention, and that Ranka is willing to offer her support to a hime most troubled.

    Glad to see I’m not the only one slightly confused and trying to piece together Sheryl’s thoughts and actions. We need to get more females on this to solve the mystery.

    Well, look at it this way. Ranka didn’t know about the plan to reconcile Alto with his father, either. Do you think that she would have wanted Alto to choose between her father and herself? Sheryl is in the exact same boat; she doesn’t know anything about Ranka’s plans or the situation with Alto’s father, so she didn’t know that she was forcing a choice on Alto’s part, either.

    You can see the giddiness on Sheryl’s face when she realizes that she can fulfill the dream that Alto told Sheryl about a limitless sky in episode six. You can hear the breathless excitement in her voice when she breaks the news to Alto. It’s not about scoring points: she’s genuinely excited for Alto. I’m not sure if you’ve been in the situation where you just happen to stumble upon some rare item that a close friend or family member was always talking about but could never find, but that’s the exact reaction right there.

    By the way, the point was not just to fly. Frontier has a ceiling to it that limits your freedom: you’re like a bird flying in a cage (there was a similar sense of this when Alto threw his paper airplane this episode only to have it eventually hit the wall, rather tha soar off endlessly like it usually does). If you look back at episode six, where Alto explains that he hates the ceiling on Frontier, there’s a scene where the projected image of the sky switches from day to night. Likewise, after Alto and Sheryl’s talk in this episode, you see the sky click from night back to day at exactly 7 am. So you get a sense of how artificial the sky at Frontier really is. As Luca points out, Galia 4 actually has an environment that you can breathe, suggesting that it really is a rare thing for them to come by.

    The erratic female behavior in this episode is puzzling to say the least.

    LOL at boobs and pokemons.

    jacobian has it right. Your scenario made me laugh but it’s not some dirty plot, just bad timing. It is Alto’s birthday after all. So everyone wants to do something special for him — whether it’s to let him fly without a ceiling like he’s always wanted, let him inherit his blood right, or let him eat some (apparently crappy) cookies.

    I for one think Sheryl is much less a mystery in this episode than she has been lately. She genuinely seems to want to do something nice for Alto, and she even tries to share a little moment when they’re talking over the radios from ship to ship. Still, this was kind of sad because if Sheryl’s really feeling sincere, Ranka’s never looked more like the underdog.

    And I don’t want to imply that Sheryl doesn’t play for keeps — look at that outfit.

    Me too, but Ranka is kinda the shy type right now so I really can’t imagine her being anything like Sheryl

    @Shirukii:

    The more the merrier

    @jacobian:

    Oh true, fine you win :P But still, Sheryl’s waayy to cool it makes me jealous for Ranka

    @Setsuna-san:

    ‘Tis why Macross F is so darn good

    @otou-san:

    I still get confused though … does Sheryl hold some power of controlling the Vajra as well? And I’d rather have bad cookies lols

    I may be in love with Sheryl, but Ranka’s just as cool. Her first concert should be next week, so we’ll probably get to see Ranka’s own special style come out. Don’t worry about that part. ;)

    Nooooo, Yotsuba is the little girl with the green hair! Closed-eyes-guy was named Yasaburo.

    That’s an interesting point you make about Alto going on the flight to prove something to himself, but Ranka should have been more direct in her message. Alto probably figured it was some normal birthday gift that can be opened later; it’s not like he realizes that Ranka has the hots for him. Also, I can’t stand when people leave me rambling voice mails!
