Macross Frontier – 13: Ranka is the New Green

Posted by blissmo 7 July 2008 13 Comments

Fate brought them together.

Oh my gosh! Alto-hime and Ranka are so meant to be [together] — they’re way too cute as a couple. It was really enjoyable to watch this episode as a whole, even though I don’t appreciate mecha as much as others do — the action was just so awesome while it lasted only for a short amount of time. If Brera is a robot with Ranka’s brother’s DNA or something, then no doubt I think he’ll be the badass guy that will end up saving Ranka by sacrificing his own life during the process. There were certainly some hints implying a Michel x Sheryl official pairing, but like Kabitzin stated, it’s probably just a flirting thing they have going on. Besides, Michel had that cute image of Klan in his mind while on the topic of Alto-hime being surrounded by stubborn girls.

Definitely no surprise that the entire incident was Grace’s idea to begin with, and things became so thrilling towards the end since the Dimension Eater was executed. Seriously, my brain hasn’t been so jumpy since Shirley’s death in CODE GEASS R2, which was not too long ago, really. Anyway, my reaction to Grace’s miraculous skill to jump so high and far was “wtf?”, until I realized that she must be a mutant of some sort, which makes me wonder if Leon is really human at all. I mean, he could be a pretty boy in disguise because he’s so fugly and disturbing right now that it pains me to see him on-screen.

Ranka’s connection with the Vajra wasn’t shocking, but I’d like to know what kind of connection she has with those big flying creatures. Man, I just kept smiling every time Alto-hime called for Ranka desparately. The girl is sure one darn lucky loli to have two guys flying to her rescue now. I’d like to see Alto-hime get jealous over Brera’s ability to protect Ranka and appear just in time before Alto-hime to save her. Then Alto-hime will feel like he’s not needed any more and Ranka can finally grab this emo period and confess her love to him!

Next week it looks like loads more mecha action and some interesting facts of Ranka’s past will surely unfold. Also, judging from the title, Ranka’s song, the only figment of her past, is actually a lullaby probably taught to her by her mother. Maybe its initial purpose was to make the aliens sleep, but someone accidentally stuffed up the tune to make the melody call for the monsters instead. Oh, and I’m loving Brera as always since he’s such a tank character and his machine is red! *squeals* Just give him a new change of clothes that don’t stick too tight to his skin and he’s perfect!

Given Kawamori’s past works being the ever present damsel in distress is not a good thing…

Hopefully Ranka will be able to save herself on occasion. Now that Brera and Alto-hime have met in single combat I suspect that Ranka’s love life is about to take a nosedive if Brera-nii makes good on his opinion that Alto-hime does not suit Ranka. I wonder if Valkyrie Pilot Sheryl is going to be a reality since there was a very prominent VF-171 shown. If such is the case Sheryl will be able to maximize her contact with Alto-hime while Ranka will have little time thanks to Brera and work. I wonder why Ranka and Brera look nothing alike though, hmmmm…

I like how Ranka blushed seeing someone as pretty and cute as her standing there half naked.

Macross Frontier official website’s “Love & Friendship & Planetary fate criss-crossed Super Galactic Love Story” = ALTO AND RANKA. ^___^ There’s a high chance Ranka’s gonna turn out to be from a different world than Alto and co. The commercial even said so.

Oh my, another Shirley hater. I partied when “it” happened LOL! That was awesome.

@Crusader – Ranka may look like a damsel in distress this episode, but what could she have done? She can’t take on that Vajra Queen and it’s not her fault she’s a Vajra magnet. :( She made blood flow in Episode 12 (lol) and showed a lot of guts when she recklessly followed Alto to another planet. She’s not just some damsel in distress like Minmay, she’s got good spirit. <3

I LOVED the BGM during their little chat. It seems to have a slow and upbeat version. Maybe it’s their theme song. It fits RankaxAlto’s chemistry oh so perfectly. Adorable. No matter how much I look at it, the story just emphasizes on Ranka and Alto’s moment. :| Instead of a huge Sheryl undertone, we got MichaelxSheryl hints in return. Now I’m a fan of them.

‘If’ Kawamori really tends to be unconventional in his pairing, I have a feeling Ranka will either have to part from Alto in the end or die. =__= I’m getting bad vibes from that inplant inside her stomach. They get along too well, a forbidden romance like that will definitely spicen things.

    P.S.
Brera has yellow-greenish hair. Ranka has green. They’re blood related. I’m willing to bet.

Criss-crossed either means all the elements join together to meet at one focal point or just moving back and forth. They probably mean Alto is going to move back and forth or be indecisive between both girls. It’s terrible wording but what can you expect from Japanese hype? :P

  • ani_d said:

@fran- actually it’s more like “a super galactic love story where love, friendship, and destiny of the planet intersects” ;) I still say it’s about the two still since all arrows regarding those 3 elements point to them in this episode.

Just thought Ranka fans will love this official BreraxRankaxAlto (with a mushroomhead on the side) Animage scan. I know I did. ^.^ It’s a 2-page spread.

Loved Alto’s expression and Brera is a bish.

I know, I leapt for joy when Shirley died, and thanks for giving me that place thing, sounds awesome. I really hope that Brera and Ranka aren’t blood-related ….

    OH PLEASE NO! XD
