Macross Frontier – 17: Ozma Needs to Learn When to Give Up
Ranka is so moé!
First of all, I am thrilled that the director fooled us all into believing that Ozma’s death would take place in this episode; however, I am also somewhat disappointed that he survived. Unfortunately, I was too busy eating away at my spaghetti that I didn’t get to find out why the violet opals were important, and I’m too lazy to rewind back to that certain part, so if anyone is kind enough to just let me know, please leave a comment. Anyhow, I really like the new opening theme, except it was sort of annoying hearing it again during the episode for Ranka’s live concert. Regardless, I love her cute outfit — it fits her very nicely. I feel sorry for Klan since Michel doesn’t seem to notice her feelings for him, or perhaps he does but doesn’t want to take things further lest it ruin their relationship.
Another thing that I enjoyed about this episode was the beginning where it showed bits and pieces of Ranka and Ozma’s past. I have no idea why it was the pineapple cake that “woke” Ranka, but pineapple cakes aren’t even nice to begin with — not that I’ve ever tried one, actually. Pineapple is sweet on its own and delicious with pizza — but cake? That just seems a bit random. There was hardly any Sheryl in this episode so I don’t know if I should be relieved or upset even though I’m a huge fan of Alto x Ranka. She did come in at the last moments, which I thought was an excellent cliffhanger how she met up with Grace and demanded that they have a little chat. Next week looks seriously depressing, but it may also mean that Sheryl gets to spend more time with Alto since she might be leaning on him or he’ll catch her when she’s sad, although the preview implies that she’ll be on her own anyway. I think Sheryl will find out the truth about everything and her being the “failed project”, so from now on, things are getting heaps better.
The violet crystals are “fold quartz”, which seem to be important for two reasons: They’re only produced in the bodies of vajra (so you need to kill them to harvest more), and they seem to allow for transportation and communication across fold faults. Luca and Leon talk about how someone who could control the distribution and use of these crystals could monopolize communication and transportation across the whole galaxy. And then a creepy Grace surrogate comes in and says that there’s something much more important at stake than just that.
I thought the whole pineapple tease nonsense was a little lame, but Ai-kun attacking Alto’s paper airplane was pretty ominous.

It pretty much felt like they were making it seem like Ozma was going to die just to mess with everyone. I’m pretty sure that after Ozma survived there was an actual line, “That would have been emotional” if he’d died. Which tears me between wanting to throw the director out a window for purposely messing with all of us or giving him a pat on the back for…messing with all of us.
Well, at least there was tons of Ranka in this episode. I am satisfied automatically. Especially with little Ranka.

I’m just happy they didn’t kill Ozma. I couldn’t find a better argument to counter Ozma’s death besides my personal bias of not wanting him to die haha I have a feeling we’re going to have a happy ending by the end of the series. I don’t think MF is as dark as I think it is. Anywho….I thought it was so cute when Alto climbed Ranka’s room. To think these two would go that far. They’re too adorable. ^.^ Piggyback, hair trying, glomping and now this. The staff never runs out of ideas. I think Ranka’s already having a gut instinct that what she’s doing to the Vajra is wrong, but her adviser Alto just have to be as naive as her.
While I’m pretty sure Sheryl will have more screentime next episode, (she’s been reduced to a minor character in the credits lol) I still don’t think the entire focus of the episode will be all about her. It’s time she realize that she’s a tool and that she should do something about it. Would it be nice if Ranka and Sheryl comes face to face to do a sing off near the end, then make up to do the duet that saved the galaxy? lol Then, maybe this DYRL Minmei vs TV Minmei vision the staff has will finally come to shape.
By the way, when Ozma said “it’s different 11 years ago, we can keep Ranka safe now”, I suddenly have a bad feeling that Ranka is someone who isn’t supposed to live a normal life. I can’t wait to see the story flesh this drama out. And it looks like Ranka’s voice nurtures the Vajra more than anything. Were those Vajra eggs hatching in the concert hall? I still go by Leon’s words in 11 about Cinderella. =/
I am pretty much livid that Ozma—and just about anyone or anything else including Ai-kun—had more screen time than Sheryl. To think that she fell so fast from so high, and yet this is not the bottom for her yet since evil—but slowly growing sexy on me—Grace is going to drop the biggest bomb on her yet.
And yea, I think deep down inside of her, she does not believe in relying anyone else but herself. So, she will try to tackle this on her own, at least for a while, until she cracks. Oh man, to see such a gigantic figure like Sheryl to fold like that… I better prepare some tissues for next week.

@ani_d: At first, I thought Alto was doing some “bad” when he was climbing those walls, but I also find it adorable how he and Ranka get along so well. I wanted to Ozma to die despite him being the awesome big brother, but I just wanted something “big” to occur besides Vajra this and Vajra that. I never realized Sheryl became a minor character (I never pay attention to any of the credits), but now that it is, chances of her ending up with Alto is very low. Hopefully you’re right in saying that she doesn’t get all the screen-time next week because that would be one of the most painful experiences of my life.

@bakaneko: I liked how Sheryl plummeted so soon–it just goes to show how much power others can have over her, that, and the director has probably become sick of her lols. She is the sort to depend on no one, but I also hope that she somehow pulls through. Instead of tissues, I’ll throw a party XD

It’s really annoying to see them everywhere misreading each scene of altoxranka like in the last episode. For them it was a a discussion between these two without any romance, adding Alto sure doesn’t have any feeling for Ranka except those of a brother
They seem to think, episode 18 will be a new twist in the love triangle because sheryl will know she’s a clone and Alto will be there to support her…Ranka already has her brother,Brera,friends and Sheryl doesn’t have anyone so it’s obvious they will pairing her with Alto
I don’t understand at all this explanation but they’re so sure Sheryl will end up with Alto and seeing how kawamori tricked us with Ozma I’m sure he reserved something for us, Ranka sure will get her prize(Alto-kun
I don’t know what will happened with Sheryl also reading from sheryl fan, she will either put the role of the housewife( no kidding! I really read this) or the pilot one makes me laught( I didn’t know they will be so desperate)

It was a pretty good troll by Kawamori and it seems that Ai-kun doesn’t much like Alto-hime either. So now Ranka has Brera and Ai-kun jealously guarding her form Alto-hime. Hopefully Ranka will catch a break, but if Alto-hime kills Ai-kun Ranka had better forgive and forget quick…
@blissmo- No no, I mean, live with humans, silly haha That would make such a good drama. And yea, the chances of Sheryl ending up with Alto has always been low for so many reasons. It even got lower when I found out that Kawamori wasn’t even planning to make Sheryl a love interest but just someone Ranka admired. =/ Ranka was supposed to be in between two guys (Alto and Brera ^.^). But you probably already heard this news. They changed some stuffs, but the plot still has a lot to do with Ranka, so I don’t think they changed a lot.
@gapp- In fairness, there’s like 1 or 2 Sheryl fans that are quite objective in that forum, but the rest are just a sad hopeless bunch. They comfort themselves with their twisted exaggerated pro-sheryl what-if scenarios and make themselves believe Sheryl will pummel Ranka the villain once she does her
stupidsuper move. Biiig whatever. Apparently, Sheryl will die of depression if Alto doesn’t get together with her. My ambivalence towards Sheryl’s character will turn into active hate if I stay in there just cuz of those sheryl worshippers. But yes, it is a feat I managed to stay there for a little longer. I don’t think other Ranka fans would even waste their time reminding that sad bunch that Macross Frontier will be different from the previous Macrosses XDAlso, I’d rather interact with rational RankaxAlto fans especially those who think Brera is hot, which is why I love this blog.

@crusader I heard about the mysterious person who will help a wet Sheryl but I’m not sure it will be Alto maybe you have a link or something else which gives us this news. I read somewhere it could be Alto’s father but I’m not sure either.
It could also be Ai -kun which hurts Alto and not the opposite ( did you see how he teared Alto’s paper?)

I hope you didn’t bring the Sheryl wasn’t supposed to be in the love triangle in the beginning for the Rankax Alto because it would be useless knowing for them it was a part of Kawamori’s draft ant it changes at the time they wrote the story .
I’m of those people who thinks that if Ranka was supposed to be the girl between two guys( Alto x Brera) since the beginning, I don’t know why he would changed his mind and makes Sheryl the winner here after all that Ranka ’s growth character.
No offense but Sheryl because of her less developped character is more seeing as a beautiful girl with a beautiful face with big boobs, beautiful voice( which nowadays sells well) and a ambitious/determined character( which I like more about her than her face or body).
For the next episode I hope they will show her more about her true story than a nude Sheryl in front of a heating

@gapp: I, too, will be disappointed if no one dies. It’s a mecha anime involving war, how can no one NOT die? And I think if there’s going to be a second season, it’s either bullshit or just plain lame. Not that the series has exactly ended yet, but stretching it to another season would be like another CODE GEASS. And so far, I find myself enjoying the first season of that anime better, so Macross F should just stay as one season, unless, of course, the ending is a huge cliff-hanger.

I also hope to keep this blog ’til the end since it’s so fun interacting with people who watch lots of anime like me.
