Macross Frontier – 18: Sheryl Plummets Like a Grape

The end is near.
Stubborn, beautiful, audacious, rich, famous — these characteristics that mold Sheryl Nome together all of a sudden plunge to the ground when she is informed of a nightmarish disease that resides within her. Unfortunately, Grace mockingly explains to this artist during their one-on-one conversation that death would soon play its part and literally take her life into its own hands. Once famous, Sheryl’s now just a forgotten figure of Macross Frontier. Long ago, I foresaw the hour when Sheryl would no longer saunter the streets or disguise herself in order to hide from fans. It was obvious that Ranka would rise above her in an unbidden manner. Be that as it may, this episode was truly depressing with a light tinge of comedy from our side-characters and a seller mistaking Alto for a female.
When Sheryl was forced to acknowledge the fact that she was rapidly losing her touch, it was a rather heart-wrenching scene, especially after she realized that Ranka’s very existence will always be far more prominent than hers. Suffice to say, compare the difference in the level of importance between a songtress of hope and a common idol. Moreover, Grace steers such a callous attitude towards Sheryl that I’m tempted to slit her throat with a butcher’s knife and pierce her head with an axe for treating the poor artist like an obnoxious corpse. What makes me want to kick Grace even more is that she’s using Ranka as a tool to an experiment. Although menacing with her sadistic behaviour, Grace does seem to be a sly and clever witch nevertheless; her certainty is threatening. Since Ranka chooses to risk her life in order to protect Macross, Ozma depends on Alto to keep a watchful eye on her at all times. That being said, it appears that Ozma knows he won’t always be there on the look-out for Ranka anymore, probably because the next time he pilots a ship, it will also be his last.
Ranka’s reaction when the army of Vajra were completely obliterated was another interesting part. Undoubtedly, she somewhat represents their mother who tries to calm or summon them through a lullaby. Speaking of which, the group of three women responsible for diagnosing the disease or whatever consists of Grace, Sheryl’s supposedly mother or grandmother, and Ranka’s (look-a-like) mother. Now I’m quite unsure as to what’s going on besides Sheryl’s fall in fame and Ranka “stealing” the spotlight. At least next week it appears that Sheryl recovers a bit, and megumi Ranka is something I’m definitely looking forward to!

Come to mama

Actually, the three women are Grace, Dr. Mao Nome (aka: the young girl from Macross Zero who was left behind, and who was played by Ranka in Ep 10), and Ranshe Mei who appears to be Ranka’s real mom (and who looks an awful lot like Sheryl). It appears that Sheryl’s last name of Nome may be from the fact it was given to her by the research team, headed by Mao Nome.
Yeah Haesslich is right about the research team.
Thing is though even if you slit Grace’s throat she’ll be back and deadlier than before. Sheryl will bounce back eventually, but Ranka better find some support other than Grace quick. At this rate Ozma no longer thinks he can play onii-chan and Alto-hime seems to have given up trying to protect Ranka while Brera is the only guy with an anti-Vajira gun. Klein seems to have a very high opinion of Sheryl…
[...] Sheryl just pretty much lost everything to Grace in this episode, and for all her pride and strength it was simply no match for Grace. Now that Sheryl knows that there is no real way for her to fight back and that she might not have enough time in this life to rebuild her career I doubt Sheryl is going to try and prove Grace wrong. Just what niche job Sheryl will find remains to be seen but now that she is in the home of Alto-hime she can either be a pilot or find a job with the Saotome troupe. I don’t think that with Alto-hime rushing to back her up that Sheryl is going to sit around and do nothing. Her image of Alto-hime was gorgeous and clearly Sheryl has a much more idealized view of how hime looks hips and all. To her credit at least now she has gotten far enough with Alto-hime that he becomes visibly angry at Sheryl bashing and pissed that he had to go to work rather than look after her. I wonder if what it takes to tip the scales in Sheryl favor is for Alto-hime to realize the very real possibility that he would lose her forever. They have been together for some time and share many intimate moments where they confided in one another. They have a level of trust that they share with no one else. Alto-hime wasn’t asking any one else to save Sheryl he wanted to do this on his own and really seemed to hate how his brother beat him to the punch. Suffice to say Sheryl’s tragic tale moved even the hearts of the most staunch Ranka fans. [...]
Well, any chance of there being an uneventful fold to a different space is ruined by the Vajra bebes sleeping in the ship. They are most likely going to kill a quarter of the people on Frontier. And what was with that guy who took Alto’s “Save Sheryl” moment? I thought he was just a one/two shot character.
And the Aimo War mix is the best song from the series. Except for maybe the new OP. Fucking amazing new OP, that is.
And Battle Frontier Cannon is HUEG.
Omisyths last blog post..Don’t Piss Off The Crazy Loli
The exhausing LT aside, I’m 99% sure that Ranshe Mei is Ranka’s real mother. I was wondering why Ranka has a different green hair from her family, but Ranshe has green hair and that pretty much says it all. She called her mother to boot. It’s so random that there’s a Vajra queen hybernating inside the research fleet and projected the same image of Ranshe Mei to Ranka. What are the chances of that Vajra turning out to be a mutated Ranshe who also destroyed the research fleet? Ranka cried instinctively when all the Vajra got annihilated, but if you think about it, it might have more to do with the loss of her mother. Not to mention, the title of episode 14 is “Mother’s” Lullaby. This is making sense too much. Can someone post a counterthesis to this?
You know what, I think Grace’s goal is to turn Ranka into a Vajra by activating those crystals…or something. After that glowing episode, Ranka sang the Vajra song instinctively. It’ll be too good to be true if those glow virus inside Ranka are harmless to her. She has a part of Vajra in her and is able to communicate with them the way Vajra does. There should be a catch here, one that’s different from Sheryl’s since hers failed. Oh yeah, and like they’ll really kill Sheryl. =__= She can lose an arm here or something, but I doubt the staff’ll kill her lol
Lastly, I love the OP lol I can’t stop listening to it. They even included Ranka and Alto trying to reach other’s hand in there. And they’re really pushing this Brera/Alto rivalry next to the main triangle, which is pretty cool.
Ranka and Sheryl have yet to sing onstage together so our forgotten singer is not going to die that soon. And I found the scene with a flustered Cathy at the sale pretty funny as well.
@Omisyth
I never actually liked the new version of Aimo but after watching this episode, I am finally able to appreciate it in a way.
@The Sojourner: I always like a good mix of Aimo and “RRRRRRRRRANNNNNNNKKKKKKKKAAAAAAA”
And as for Ozma, If he’s to go out, it had better be in spectacular fashion. He’s dodged too many deathflags for anything less.
C.I.s last blog post..Strike Witches 06 – A Campaign against Myopia?
@ Haesslich : The vajra will for sure kill a lot of people in Frontier and sheryl will overcome her illness( Ranka may be the cure, because of her cristal inside her belly wich interact with the vajra which are resistant against the attack(except aimo) Their immunity can save sheryl.
@ crusader : Alto is Ranka’s support. The OP is pretty obvious in this case. Ranka is definitely the one who will win Alto’s heart because in what? 28/30 episode ,the Sheryl x Alto here at the 18 is good for Ranka at the 23/final episode and they must also set the main plot with the vajra/galaxy/frontier…
And sure Klan has a high opiinion of sheryl because they’re on the same boat, they love a fool who doesn’t know their feeling…
@Omisyth He’s alto step brother, I think he was adopted by alto’s father because Alto dropped the kabuki stuff for the pilot one
Hime was famous and this a a tradition in Japon to follow the done work of generation . Alto quit, so Ranzou his father disowned him and took a new son even though he know he will never be as talented as his own was.
@ani_d : I agree with you when you say Ranshe Mei is Ranka’s mother she has the same color hair, the face.. the name..
) but you said the vajra queen” projected the same image of Ranshe Mei to Ranka. ” so she should recall a song.
But if Ranshe was mutated into a vajra it implies that the experimentation inside the Global was doing well until they crash in Galia 4. However Grace and Mao were with her in the research fleet . We don’t know what happenned to Mao but Grace is safe and sound and became a cyborg. How do you explain the fact that Ranshe/vajra needed Ranka to wake her up even though she knows well Aimo.
she could have done so without Ranka( I know vajra’s brain are like non existent so maybe she doesn’t have the QI to do so anymore
In episode 13 we see Ranka singing in the VF and suddenly a vajra which is waking up… We all know that Aimo is not needed for them, they just have to hear Ranka’s voice. So why the vajra queen which lay eggs and has some cristal in her too : http://img171.imageshack.us/my.php?image=12lo5lx7vw4.jpg, why didn’t she launched the ship in projecting her old self (Ranshe human) singing aimo like in episode 14 ?Why did she wait for Ranka to come ?
My thought is that the vajra queen wasn’t Ranka’s mother but the first vajra with the memory of her creator, Ranshe who downloaded the data on her( her hologram, voice, message) in the vajra mother which if she died was supposed to keep to work ( which I think since the beginning was to unite the vajra and human against protoculture/protodeviln) by following Ranka who was the key(she has the “immunize”cristal inside her for aimo which weaken the vajra to control them) sheryl was a part of the plot too but she just has another cristal than Ranka( she has the cristal which can reduce the dislocation for being able to intercept the vajra.)
I’m sure they will not kill sheryl either…but they will play with us, making sheryl x alto closer for after diclosing Altos’ true feeling towards Ranka.
I listened to the OP and I liked more triangler the first time I heard it but with the time I will like it. I missed alto trying to reach Ranka’s hand in the OP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ijust rewatched it!! But how do you know it’s ranka and alto’s hand ? sheryl is in the OP too but we don’t see any Alto and sheryl romantic scene there
I have a question thought : no one here is kind of pissed with this love triangle ?! I am !
@ the sojouner : Me too. Cathy was a passive character at the beginning but i like her more now with Ozma and Klan ! Ranka still is my N°1 thought !
@ C I : I like it when he says ” RANKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ” I will wait a long time for the
” SHERYLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL ” one !
My… It wasn’t supposed to be a novel…
But how do you know it’s ranka and alto’s hand ?
Because it’s not. It’s Ranka and Sheryl’s hand.
rubi: I don’t think that Fold Quartz (aka: what’s inside Ranka) is the answer to Sheryl’s V-type infection. Something else may be , and it may involve Ranka, but I don’t think that taking blood or whatever from Ranka will fix things. Hell, we don’t even know what the V-type infections DO – do they kill people, or turn them into Vajra? If it’s the latter, maybe Ranka can talk the infection (proto-Vajra) down, but that’s something we’ve yet to see from her.
But we don’t know what the exact timeline is here – Grace and the 117th Fleet may have parted company before it was destroyed eleven years back, and the Vajra may have Ranshe’s data but were not necessarily created by her… or she could’ve been another V-type infection victim and absorbed into the collective. We DO know that Grace was on Galaxy later and picked up Sheryl, and had to have done it at least seven-to-ten years ago to judge by her visible age as well as the knowledge that Sheryl is 17 now. Sheryl was also one of a series of experiments in creating a “galactic fairy” to control the Vajra… and Grace only just now stumbled on a better one than Sheryl, who doesn’t appear to have any influence on them at all… although the fold quartz in her earring did seem to carry the data, along with Ranka, to the Vajra ship in Ep 7.
Now, if Sheryl was adopted before the 117th fleet was lost, then she could’ve been named by Doctor Mao Nome herself. Otherwise, if Grace found her less than ten years ago, it was given to her by Grace in memory of Doctor Nome. However, the funny thing is that Sheryl and Doctor Ranshe Mei do have an uncanny resemblance to one another; whether this is due to a coincidence, limited character design time, or a deliberate nod towards Ranshe Mei being Sheryl Nome’s mother is currently undetermined. It would explain Sheryl growing up alone and unaware of her mother’s origins, as well as why Grace would specifically hunt her down.
Sorry for the length in advance. :p
@rubi: You’re good. Thanks for the counterthesis, I might’ve just gotten a little paranoid.
It got me thinking now lol I’ll see if I can respond to some of it. Take note, this is all pure speculation. =P
“How do you explain the fact that Ranshe/vajra needed Ranka to wake her up even though she knows well Aimo.”
I think it was really by chance that the Vajra queen was awakened by Ranka’s voice. Nobody expected that Ranka will go to Galia for Alto. Even if Ranka wasn’t there, Grace would’ve stirred the Vajra colony all the same by letting Brera find the nest, disturbing their peace, then activating the dimension eater. The Vajra crystals (fold quartz) grow inside the Vajra. Everytime a Vajra dies, everyone feels it through the fold crystals and they adapt to it.
About Grace, she’s more like Grace in the Shell to me. XD I don’t think she has a physical human body now. Her body that got destroyed in Galia 4 wasn’t a human body anymore. The real Grace must’ve betrayed the research fleet and escaped before everyone in it perished. Grace seems more like a traitor to the project more than anything else.
“My thought is that the vajra queen wasn’t Ranka’s mother but the first vajra with the memory of her creator”
I thought so too at first at least, but if you think about it, I don’t think memories can be downloaded into the Vajra like some computer. They’re kinda organic too. Leon said that there was an entity that’s been commanding the Vajra–we call that entity the queen. If Ranka is the ‘little queen’, then who is the first Queen? Her mom, right?
If they were researching the cure for the V-type virus. I think Ranshe might have gotten infected by the virus the same as Ranka, but they managed to cure it–or maybe just quarantine it. Ranshe’s probably wasn’t a total success so she mutated, but it was perfected on Ranka, then Ranka lost her memory. The cure might be something unique so Ranka’s case is one of a kind. Maybe it’s one of the reasons why her body doesn’t want to remember.
Even if Ranka got cured, she’s now producing fold waves through her voice and can even feel Vajra’s lament/pain whatever that was. What are the chances that the cured V-type infection won’t backfire? Grace of course knows something that’s why she’s making Ranka sing to the Vajra. I think more than to stir the Vajra, Grace is aiming for the glow things inside her. Doesn’t it look like she’s activating those vajra crystals inside Ranka? The glowing was worse in 18. The part that doesn’t fit though is the new infestation of Vajra inside Frontier itself. Who put those there? -_-
As for why they want to awaken Ranka’s Vajra instincts, she’s the little queen, if she loses her human instincts, they can control her and Galaxy can now finally control the Vajra. =___= For Leon’s share of the deal, if Ranka totally becomes the new Vajra
command centerQueen she can command every Vajra to leave Frontier alone and then hand her over to Galaxy. Sounds like a good deal. Outrageous? Yes? No?“But how do you know it’s ranka and alto’s hand ?”
I was watching this RankaxAlto fanvid and was all, “hey, wait a minute…” ^.^ And yes, the hands no doubt belong to Ranka and Alto. <3 Sweet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYp9rdRFWjg
“sheryl is in the OP too but we don’t see any Alto and sheryl romantic scene there”
Probably because Alto will soon realize that his creator has been pairing Ranka and him from the very start and there’s nothing he can do about it lol! Alto looks really cool when his helmet shield shattered by the way.
I empathize with Sheryl having lost her career
. I hope Ranka would tell her producer to make a lively duet with Sheryl so people would notice her again. I don’t know what’s with her sickness but I hope she wouldn’t die. Meanwhile, Ranka is endangered as well. I think she partially receive some recoil damage when Vajras are killed. (just a speculation as well)After all, she is somewhat Vajra as well right? (maybe???)
I also got goosebumps with the weird thing shown at the last (the gray thing with few wires, i don’t know.).
Grace should die.
jitenshas last blog post..Wild ARMs 5 – Sad
@jitensha- Sheryl can have Ranzo Saotome jumpstart her career in Enka lol Ranka has those fold quartz inside of her and that’s a Vajra part, so yes, she’s part-Vajra.
Here’s to hoping it doesn’t get worse.
That means both Ranka and Sheryl are specimens… Can’t imagine mothers having their own daughters as the subject of their very own experiment.
jitenshas last blog post..Hiatus
@Haesslich: That makes sense, since Sheryl was a lost puppy in the past.
@Crusader: But if I can kill bunnies, surely Grace is no different.
@Omisyth: I, too, love the new OP. Hopefully, quarter, or even half, of Macross gets destroyed. Then we can finally see some people die.
@ani_d: OMG(oodness)!! I really love it how they’re pushing the Brera/Alto rivalry! It’s such a huge hint that their relationship will be extremely important. I like your idea on how Leon and company are trying to transform Ranka into a Vajra somewhat. It’d be so interesting, and I am quite speechless as to what else I should say to sound smart.
Brera is hot.
@The Sojourner: Haha, I almost forgot that part! I though flushed Cathy was adorable.
@C.I.: I want to see him get blown into shreds
@rubi: Rather than being pissed at the love-triangle, I find it compelling. Because I’m not such a huge fan of mecha anime, nor am I any intelligent in military-based happenings, I think the love-triangle is the only thing keeping me from not following Macross. I couldn’t care less who Alto ends up with, although my preferable choice is definitely Ranka. He gets along with the two of them really well, so whatever the director does, I just hope he makes the end pairing one of the most epic.
@jitensha: That’s such a good idea. Ranka and Sheryl should become a duet! And then I’ll love them both and Alto won’t have to choose anymore! It can be a threesome!
Grace lied, Sheryl cried. Being Ranka’s biggest fan I know I’m supposed to be happy, but seeing Sheryl literally fall from Grace got me a little teary eyed ):
Shins last blog post..Code Geass R2 Turn 18: A Kiss To Build A Dream On
Sorry for the length in advance. :
@ jen you should watch the link video ani_d posted, this is Ranka and Alto’s hand
@haesslich
(I’m joking she’s already..)
I don’t think either that Ranka’s blood is the answer to the solution but fold quartz only. I talked about the possibility for Sheryl and Ranka to be linked since the beginning with each of them owning each of the two cristal which are the foundations of the vajra technology. 2 cristal : Ranka’s cristal = CAN Activate the connexion with the vajra and lower their immunity(by aimo)
Sheryl’s cristal = CAN Reduce the dislocation in the whole Galaxy ( like in episode 7 when alto heard her because of her cristal)
Saying that you can suppose the Ranka’s one is able to reverse the ” weaken the vajra “process into a ” reinforce their strenght” just by the way she’s singing aimo.
So if it’s just Sheryl earring which is the key for the dislocation we can just grab it and throw her
but the answer here is EMOTION. For the earring to be activate i think some emotion is needed like Ranka into the song and that’s why we will see Sheryl again sing( for Alto of course ) and putting more emotion than she ever did into diamond crevasse.. and the song is called Northern Cross like everybody knows. They surely modified her body either for increase this emotion or another theory : she became in the 117 research fleet a cyborg or a clone(Ranshe Mei probably) and her consciousness is affected by this virus type infection( seems like a virus name just for the robot kind no ?). I don’t think they portrayed Sheryl like Ranshe due to a lack of imagination but it was intented.
@ani_d You’re welcome. It’ Macross Frontier ! We will never see the end of our assumption until the very end. Just for the love plot thought
That’s if Ranka doesn’t die at the end or go with the vajra !
No one seems to think about it but Alto has high chance to die at the end not Hikaru, not Isamu ,Basara was a singer but the others didn’t die… I hope he will not thought !
” I think it was really by chance that the Vajra queen was awakened by Ranka’s voice.”
could have been Ranka’s mother, she could have escaped a long tiime ago since she is able to reflect Ranshe’s presence. she could have use it to reflect Ranshe’s aimo for lthe vessel launching.
I think so too. but I was talking about your idea that Ranshe may have been the vajra queen which alto killed.
If this horrible vajra
she didn’t do it but due to hazard Ranka came and singed which waked her and made her accomplish her mission as a biomechanical machine created by Ranshe : to find Ranka and delivered her the message about Aimo( a peaceful song) by the hologram form of Ranshe.
When you think about it, The vajra queen didn’t harm ranka but just put her in the nest and after that launched the ship towards Frontier if I remember well as if she intented to talk or enter in contact with them but pacifically with the help of Ranka,.
My thought is that the vajra queen wasn’t Ranka’s mother but the first vajra with the memory of her creator<<”I thought so too at first at least, but if you think about it, I don’t think memories can be downloaded into the Vajra like some computer.”
The vajra like Leon said in episode 8 I think are like machine which doesn’t have a brain but are commanded by a clever entity which can be human or clone , cyborg…
It appears to be Ranka . all their body was conceived to be able to surivive at the galaxy but also attack, they have weapon, they just seem to aim one goal : Ranka but when someone or something interfere they act more like machine than organic being.
I Sheryl became a clone after her hiatus with Grace in the research fleet, and was brainwashed with false memory, just one goal, singing I think it’s possible to do the same think with a vajra like Ranshe may have done so with the vajra queen. The first queen became the first queen , she has a link to all the others vajra because she layed them and may have been created by Ranshe with bigger cerebral fonction than the others.
“Ranshe’s probably wasn’t a total success so she mutated, but it was perfected on Ranka, then Ranka lost her memory.”
What a mother! To put a virus on your child !
Your idea is that Ranka’s mother is the vajra queen OK ( I think sheryl may still be a clone ( after the evil picked her in the streets) but you want her to be a monster too with her child ?
If ranshe mutated, why sheryl hasn’t the four eyed yet? It can take some time for the incubation but Ranka was a child at that time, we all know children are more immunize than adults so why Ranshe would have tested it on her then on her own child knowing she had less chances of surviving than Ranka it’s more like a suicide for me.Moreover, she is a scientist she was needed to follow the reaction of Ranka’body to the virus if Graced betrayed them and leaved, with just Mao left she should feared for Ranka’s life… and Ranka doesn’t want to remember because of the amnesia something some post tra
uma due to the choc when the accident happenned in the fleet she must have seen her mother’s death….
As for Grace, I think she’s aiming to Ranka’s emotion not the cristal specifically( If it was the case she would have order Brera to kidnap Ranka and after cut her in piece…)
Why Sheryl was a failure? Because she didn’t have the emotion to activate the cristal(for the dislocation mode) nor Ranka’s cristal( for the immunize mode) and either didn’t she know aimo.
Sheryl will finally have a role in the story because she will be able to surprise Grace who though she was useless.
She will finally be able to activate her own earring by the power of her love(emotion) for Alto which couldn’t be done in her other song because she wasn’t in love, didn’t know she could die for someone which nurture the cristal.
I think Leon is not the bad one and Bilrer is kind of suspect too…
I watched the vide, thanks for the link This is obviously RxA hands.
“Alto will soon realize that his creator has been pairing Ranka and him from the very start and there’s nothing he can do about it lol”
I think so too. More, I think Ranka will be the first to realize that she doesn’t need Alto ’s words to be confident in herself but she can do it on her own after that only Alto will find out he needs her not like other sheryl’s fan say for the support she gives him like a sister or friend ( which i think will be Sheryl’s role even she doesn’t want to) or because he is pushed to do so by Michel,Ozma,Luca…. He will realize he needs her because he loves her and doesn’t want her to be stole by Brera( jealousy..)
Sheryl’s fan are all happy to see this turn of events in episode 18. But I would be really worried at their place knowing we have still 28 episode to go and Rxa in episode 13 wasn’t even ended that they’re making a SxA pair like that…
@blissmo “He gets along with the two of them really well, so whatever the director does, I just hope he makes the end pairing one of the most epic.”
To the guys who think ranka is an ugly green hair puppy……<<< Thaanks ! Because of you, she will for sure be with Alto !!!
I think he will do so in making a Rankax Alto end ( if he doesn’t die) because if sheryl wins(unlikely..) it wouldn’t be epic knowing this is too cliche : she’s the beauty unlike Ranka the puppy so she will end up with Alto…
We will see a the most of sheryl’s biaised disappear from the surface of the web the final episode if not before
I must admit thought:I fear that Kawamori may be influenced by those Shery’ls fans out there which we need to admit it are too many compared to us Ranka’s fan and by that might set a end without a real winner with a Alto who doesn’t choose …
I read somwhere there are a whole army in China… knowing more than 300 million use the net so 150 may watch anime…; this is not so good for us. It will be a end for selling out to not displeased sheryl’s fan.
But I think we can trust him. He gived the bigger role to Ranka, he will not sell her because of fandom but end the serie according to the core of the anime : ” don’t judge a book by it’s cover” Ranka may be ugly for some ( i thnk about the fansubber…) but she is the innocent one here , even if sheryl likes Alto this will be an unrequited love
Wow. Just wow. This episode was dark and painful to watch, but fantastic for all that. For whatever reason, I’m a Cheryl fanboy so this was a particularly harrowing experience…a really well-done episode though.
There was a lot of info dumped onto us here, which gives plenty of food for thought regarding Cheryl’s origins and Ranka’s ability. Even so, the one-two emotional punch left more of an impression on me. Grace is evil and all, but Brera is really starting to grate on me. He just pops up out of nowhere, reminds Alto or Ozma how insignificant they are, then disappears – he seems to be Grace’s underling who exists to make my favourite characters miserable. As for Cheryl being whisked away to the Saotome place…it was unexpected but hopefully might offer Alto a chance to reconcile the differences with his family and perhaps help Cheryl too.
Ep 17 had stunning music but this one ups the awesomeness factor even further…I’m falling in love with this series more and more. Did anyone else notice the ad partway through for the Japanese Blu Ray release by the way? If only it were licenced and given the HD treatment in the West too…
Martins last blog post..Macross Frontier 11-16: the rise and rise of Ranka Lee
I bet Grace killed Dr. Mao Nome and Ranshe Mei and stole their research, I cant imagine those two doing such inhumane thming…
Fame isn’t really something that’s under either Sheryl or Ranka’s control. As the girls in front of the bargain bin noted, there hasn’t been any promotional material on Sheryl in ages; most likely a consequence of Grace pulling the plug on Sheryl’s career.
Even though this episode casts Sheryl down further than ever before, it also serves to highlight her strengths. In earlier episodes, the phrase “I am Sheryl Nome” could easily be taken to be overconfidence on her part, but yet here we see her use it to stay strong for Michael and Klan’s sake. I was very moved by watching her try to console them, even though she was the one who needed the support most of all.
With regards to Alto, she’ll most likely start to distance herself and try to bear her burden alone. As tough as it may be to bear, at least she’ll be able to spare Alto the heartache of becoming too attached to her.
Sheryl’s definitely going to be topping my list of favourite anime heroines for a long time.
@ rubi : Yeah once I look closely, it’s a scene from ep 2. Good spotting!
There are signs with alto and sheryl’s parts, too. When she’s naked, there are two colors around her body. Alto and Sheryl’s colour triangles.
But we can all agree that the OP doesn’t mean anything. If it’s taken as proof, then how do you explain the ending? It’s the story that counts.
With regards to Alto, she’ll most likely start to distance herself and try to bear her burden alone.
Well said.
How about Cathy’s shopping skills? While Bobby and Monica were fighting over a single shirt, Cathy already had like a billion bags of clothes. Especially with the emergency sortie, it shows that Cathy is a savvy shopper!

I like his character he isn’t that bad What did he do to Sheryl ?
@ EvilDevil what inhumane things ?
@ jacobian “With regards to Alto, she’ll most likely start to distance herself and try to bear her burden alone. ”
and not distance yourself it doesn’t make sense.
I think the opposite.
Ok she knows she is dying so doesn’t want to tell the thruth to Alto by fear he just stay with her out of pity. But when you know you’re dying the most logical thing is to pass more time with the person you know you will never see again
But think about what you just wrote.: “start to distance herself and try to bear her burden alone”.
The last episode is clearly a hint of what she is going to do in the next episode. She was in the rain hoping Alto will come and console her. If his brother didn’t show up, we must likely would have seen her leading towards SMS like the other time.
We are going to see more Sheryl and Alto together in the next episode 19-23 ,while Ranka will make one’s way through the mud.
@jen “There are signs with alto and sheryl’s parts, too”
Of course there are ! But not that explicit. when you see ranka’s and alto hands trying to reach the other you can deduce a reciprocal exchange of feelings ( it could be friendship for you or love for another … ) but sheryl’s naked with a blue/pink triangle around her…
what does it mean ?( maybe it will be their first
, i’m joking , but we don’t see Alto here except his triangle, seems more like Sheryl’s wakefulness consciousness because of her love for alto than something else )… I said it because of some people who claim everywhere that the ED is full of win for Sheryl <<< BUT :
” But we can all agree that the OP doesn’t mean anything. If it’s taken as proof, then how do you explain the ending? It’s the story that counts.”
You’re right here this is really blurry. The ending means more a Sheryl bound to her destiny/fate with the ribbons around her than her death .
I just realize that you aren’t talking about the end of the opening but the ED with northern Cross. the ED unlike many seem to think isn’t a pop song which shows alto’s and Sheryl’s love to each other( I’m speaking about the drawings with their kiss).
It’s a sad song but Yeah!, Kanno reign masterfully in the art to give some pulse in a song full of sorrow… Many take the bait thought but I suggest you to read the lyrics you will understand what I mean… But like you said the story counts a lot !
” ” With regards to Alto, she’ll most likely start to distance herself and try to bear her burden alone. “Well said..”"
Like I said above it’s unlikely to happen.
@ Kabitzin she seemed to be embarrassed thought
@Shin: I felt the same way. I feel so bad for Sheryl now
@ani_d: I have a feeling Alto will more likely end up with Ranka as well, but we all suspected the death of Ozma in episode 17, yet it never happened. Who knows, the director might do the same thing here as well.
@Martin: Brera does seem to appear randomly sometimes, but he’s still cool and hot.
@EvilDevil: I wouldn’t be surprised if Grace did
@jacobian: I must certainly agree, but Ranka is still my favourite nevertheless. If Sheryl does distance herself, then I can only imagine things becoming more painful for Alto, especially since then he’d have to choose between Ranka or Sheryl, which one needs him more, etc.
@Kabitzin: If only I could shop like good ol’ Cathy
I don’t think Cathy was embarassed, I think she was flushed from the mad skillz she just exhibited. That or she was buying something spicy for Ozma…
BTW, is her engagement still on?

@rubi and blissmo: I’ve been thinking about what it is about Brera that annoys me (what can I say, it was a slow day at work today!
) and the conclusion I came to is it’s not that he’s annoying as a character but the fact that we still don’t know much about him. Watching characters act without rhyme or reason, especially when it upsets the likes of Alto and Ozma who I’ve become quite attached to, gets on my nerves. I’m hoping Ranka’s song encourages him to betray Grace and act on his own – that would be quite something actually. Imagine how that would shake her plans up! And yeah, I can see why you ladies find him appealing!
Martins last blog post..Macross Frontier 11-16: the rise and rise of Ranka Lee
@Kabitzin: She’s probably going to refuse it, but I think it’s still on
@Martin: Haha, that IS sort of annoying that there’s nothing about him that we know about, but it sure would be awesome if Ranka does manage to convince him to betray Grace. Damn right he’s hot! XD
Halo! The babes are here! This is my sexiest site to visit. I make sure I am alone in case I get too hot. Post your favorite link here.
