A Digital Boy is Fine Too OR Let’s Get You Caught Up On the Most Overlooked Show this Season.

Yes! I’ve finally overcome the many technical difficulties to do my first post on this blog! Such obstacles as Photobucket being an angry, violent, drunken rapist, finding out that my username is case sensitive, and the simple issue of deciding what to blog were hurdles on my path, but all have now been overcome!

And now to bitch at you. YOU – yes YOU – haven’t been watching Amatsuki. I know this because I have yet to read about it on ANYONE’S blog and every forum containing a thread about it has long died. Well congrats, asshole! You’ve been missing out on easily one of the best shows this season! (behind only Code Geass R2 and Kure-nai in my book, and Code Geass is only good i that LOL WIN sort of way). So I’m going to give you a complete analysis of the first 6 eps so that you can get all excited about how totally awesome it sounds and go download all 6 currently subbed episodes.

… that is, if you’re the right audience. To be honest, it’s not really too surprising that this show is unpopular – it’s a show that has a niche audience and doesn’t try to appeal to people outside of this (which for a niche guy like me gets it mad points.) The show is calm, relaxed, and focused. The plot isn’t complicated, and doesn’t pretend to be more original than it is (high school boy is transported to ancient times, turns out to be able to see spirits, may or may not actually be god, etc.). Keeping this in mind, the show sets out to improve itself in other areas – namely characters, and as any slice-of-life fan can tell you, good characters are a thousand times more important than plot.

The main character, who goes by Tokidoki, is one of the most likeable male characters I’ve come across. He’s just a purely, genuinely great guy. He always tries to make the best of a situation, and prefers to look at things in a bright way – he’s laid back, but he’s also defensive of his beliefs. If he did a little more ass-kicking (which he does get to do a little of in episode 4) he’d be the perfect hero. He’s also got a best friend character who plays the classic cool guy/genuinely good friend.

The lead female, Kuchiha, is a fucking godsend. She rectifies every problem that I have with anime leading ladies and I want to have sex with her voice love her personality. She starts off acting like a cold bitch, which put me off from the start because I’m not a fan of the cold bitch type when they aren’t the main character, mostly because all they ever do is argue with people. And then, when Tokidoki rescues her in episode 2, she starts to look like she might be a tsundere, and I HATE tsundere. However, Kuchiha pulls off the best motherfucking thing I have seen in a long time – she tuns out to be an honest-to-goodness likeable person. She accepts Tokidoki and, I shit you not, becomes friends with him, trusts him, smiles around him, and almost admits her love for him within 5 fucking episodes. I almost shat myself in awe.

Getting around to the plot itself now, it’s pretty cut and dry. There are factions of demons and demon slayers and neither is necessarily good or evil. Both want to use Tokidoki’s god power to defeat the other and neither is afraid to admit it. The one that is portrayed more as the bad guy is another character whom I respect at an unbelievable level for a speech he gives in episode 5 that I won’t spoil for you. He’s also teammates with this big ass tengu who happens to be the most normal person in the show which leads to some hilarity.

The first 3 episodes were unbelievably good, while eps 4 and 5 were a little less so because they focused more on action and plot (respectively) than characters, but ep 6 picks right back up again. You may or may not find yourself fitting this show’s niche, but you should definitely give it a shot. In any case, I’ll be episodically blogging it from now on.

    …LOL! I would’ve watched it if I could download… And if I could’ve been bothered finding a fan-subber… I have no idea what the hell is going on without life-saver subs. By the way, your swearing brings life back into this blog. Very proud!

    lol, this blog is where I’m cutting down on my motherfucking crudeness, XD. However I saw blis talking shit in a post so I figure it’s all good.

    i did a post on amatsuki… =( and one with loads of good comments, just that everyone skipped it and went for the ecchi stuff.

    I don’t really see how this differs from a ton of other shows out there and your description of this Kuchiha girl really does make her sound more tsundere than you’d prefer. I’ll give it a shot though because I do fit into this niche.
    Also, I do not agree with midnightrose in the least bit. Your swearing doesn’t bring life to anything other than your own stupidity. Your constant crudeness just shows that you lack the words to express yourself so you lean on your foul mouth as a crutch. Please don’t belittle this blog with excessive f-bombs. I won’t be the guy who says don’t ever cuss. We all tend to, and blissmo isn’t much of a saint when it comes to this area either, but please just cut back on the curse words if you can.

    @The P-Meister
    there’s ecchi stuff in this show?
    21st Century Digital Boy, you didn’t mention any ecchiness! I love/hate ecchi!

    Ah shit I love to yell at people for not watching this show or that, and look at me — I don’t watch this. I feel schooled. Maybe I’ll check it out.

    @JLeeson Take it light, you gotta get into a groove before things fall into place. Look at Jacob, he’s finding his angle after getting a bucket of Hateorade dumped on him. First post, things’ll even out.

    Damn, I sound like an old hippie or something. You damn kids get off my lawn!

    JL: You’re very right. I have no linguistic skills whatsoever, hahaha. I type exactly what comes into my mind at that second, and I try to keep a conversational tone as if you were talking to me directly – I type just aas a I talk, which is to say hyperactively, and profanely. Also, I come from the south, and I translate both my southern accent and black slang into text often (hence my use of the word ‘y’all’ in absurd frequency at times). Yes, it IS possible for me to tone it down, by making a concious effort, and if really truly necessary I’ll do it for y’all since I did join this circle for the sake of putting restrictions on myself, lol. However, when I mentioned ‘toning it down’ in my sign-up form, I meant more along the lines of not talking about child pornography, guro, and random unwarrented profanity which makes up my blog.

    As for the show, Kuchiha is the opposite of tsundere, and there is NO ecchi in this show WHATSOEVER.

    otou-san: you’re already my pal XD.

    And you call us children?

    @21st Century Digital Boy:

    Actually, I don’t mind at all that you write the first thing that comes to your head and you swear. It’s actually a different style of blogging and team blogs are usually more fun when everyone is different. Most of the time I have “shit” somewhere in my posts because it releases the SRS BSNS tension, lols, but anyhow, I thought this post was very lols anyway.

    @JLeeson:

    STOP SCARING AWAY THE NEW WRITERS! XD

  • 21st Century Digital Boy (author) said:

    Actually looking back through, I only dropped 3 f-bombs and all were in the part I’m most enthusiastic about – Kuchiha. It’s like a record low for me, haha.

    I am watching this show and it’s just kind of…THERE. I’m hoping Toki’ll be able to control his hax and end up crushing everyone and becoming evil. Evil-anti-hero is awesome. And BONTEN ROCKS!!!!

  • Caitlin said:

    I’ve watched some of the episodes. I just didn’t feel like blogging it. Have to agree with JLeeson though.

  • Makoto said:

    I like to reserve swearing for special occasions.Actually,I didn’t even bother about this series.While it may not suck,its just a matter of preference and time constraints.And its no secret that more people prefer other stuff to this.

  • The P-Meister said:

    JLeeson –> no, i meant they skipped the post cuz they were distracted by other posts that had ecchi stuff in them. =)

    The thing about Amatsuki is that its FUUUULLLL of conversations and its not very nice to blog about conversations is it?

  • Setsukyie said:

    Don’t know if I will watch this. Maybe I’ll try but the possibility of me liking this show is near zero. Who knows, I always suck at picking shows. Just like the time when I hated Code Geass, and I regret it.

    Actually, what I really wanted to say here is, you hate tsundere? Impossible..lol

    @21st Century Digital Boy
    I reread what I said and I sounded kinda pissed, so I didn’t mean to sound like I was a snapping turtle aiming at your head. Welcome aboard, and please say ya’ll all you want because I am a Texan myself so I tend to indulge in the occasional cowboy slang too.
    Also, I see your name is 21st Century, that mean you like 20th and 21st Century Boy mangas? I got two friends that absolutely love them and have pressured me into being interested enough to read it this summer.
    I’m still gunna watch this Amatsuki show.

    @blizzy
    But, scaring/hazing the newbies is my self-proclaimed job! >_<

    @The P-Meister
    oh! gotcha.

  • 21st Century Digital Boy (author) said:

    JL: s’all good, you’s cool beans. I could tell you weren’t trolling me, so I’m fine with ya ^_^ I haven’t read that manga, though I’ve heard many good things about it, so I oughtta try some time. My name comes from a Bad Religion song of the same name, which has actually spawned many usernames across the internet – I care less about the song than the term, though, as i think it represents me. I live in the moment, and constantly keep with the curve, so I like my name to state that I am in the ‘now’. On some sites I had to shorten it to ‘2006digitalboy’ and have had them update my name yearly lol.

  • JLeeson said:

    @Century Boy —–>(got tired of typing out your whole name)
    that’s funny. I think it’s clever. I’ll have to listen to that song so I can understand exactly where you’re coming from.

    BFA is doing fansubs for Amatsuki as we speak, it’ll prolly be done in 48 hours, kekeke.
