I think this anime really succeeds on all levels. You have a pretty realistic story, hell, it's not even the story that really fascinated me. It's the main character, Fujiki, himself. Never have I seen such a realistic anime character before. He's definitely a lot like Balsa from Seirei no Moribito in terms of realism. He's just eerily human, he's not the best samurai, not the worst samurai, he's just a normal soldier who follows orders from his insanely evil master. He never complains, although you can clearly see his pain and his hatred for Irako in every scene. Definitely my favorite anime character. This is my favorite anime ever.

Things settle down though, and by about the third episode, the narrative is fairly straight forward and easy to comprehend. Also, the violence and 'general sickness' hits bizarre levels of gratuity; one samurai giving himself a blow-job, another nutcase happily chewing on a severed nipple are but two of the more disturbing things that happen later on. In short, if Shigurui had a smell, it would be that of dried urine. Kind of disgusting, really! From the screen shoots, the art looks nice and that will all the more add to a more horrifying experience when I see some guts flying around on screen.
