Macross Frontier – 03

Lucky Altoh, he gets to stay with a hot chick AND a cute one.

Summary:

The Victor appears before Altoh, Ranka and Sheryl, but they are saved when Ozma dives in to rescue them. However, the Victor manages to overpower him so Michel and Luca have to help out. Michel manages to land a wound on the Victor but unfortunately, the injury doesn’t stop the machine from attacking Ozma. The Victor flees with Ozma, Michel and Luca pursuing it while the others find refuge in an underground room since a hole burst through the globe, causing the air in space to enter. Later on, the Victor escapes or is defeated (I really got lost at that point), but Ozma is severely wounded so Michel and Luca have to carry him back. By then, Grace has located Sheryl and saved the party from almost running out of oxygen in the room. Ranka witnesses her brother being taken back to the battle ship and starts crying, wondering why he got himself hurt. Suddenly, she collapses back, only to be held by Altoh.

Soon after in the hospital, Altoh asks what’s wrong with Ranka and Canalia, the doctor, answers that Ranka suffers a disease that causes her to forget painful things due to a traumatic event in her past. Altoh questions this and Ozma replies that Ranka saw her entire family die before her eyes, which also means that Ozma is not her real brother. Ranka doesn’t remember any of this so she doesn’t know the truth yet. Altoh demands to know what the Vjara are so Ozma gives him 24 hours to think over this, since once he joins the military there’s no going back. Leon is at his desk with Cathy when she accidentally calls him by his real name. He leans in to kiss her but she’s hesitant since she believes her father will catch them. Meanwhile, Sheryl is taking a bath when she realizes that she’s lost an earring, thus deciding to pay another visit to Altoh.

While they’re in the elevator, Luca apologizes for not telling Altoh about this whereas Michel warns Altoh about not being able to turn back and concludes that he’s just running away from his father and his home. Shortly afterwards, Altoh is walking and gets agigated by the idea of him running away. His thoughts cease when he hears Ranka seeing. He greets her and the two go to the balcony to have a better view of the area. Altoh comments on how nice the song was and she tells him that the song is the only fragment of her memory. She likes to sing up here because no one else will hear her, but Altoh thinks otherwise, suggesting she go sing for the world. She continues singing upon his request and in the meantime Gilliam’s funeral takes place. After the funeral, Altoh goes to meet Ozma and he joins the military. Ranka competes in the Miss Frontier contest and at the same time Sheryl watches the show, glad that the girl’s finally being honest with herself.

Thoughts:

It was a decent episode but nothing really fitting in the WOW-factor. Ranka continues to be extremely adorable and she does remind me of a dog sometimes, the way her hair floats up and everything. The scene where she was singing while Gilliam’s funeral was happening reminded me a lot of the 3rd Lord of the Rings where Pippin was singing to please the Steward, whose son Feramier(?) was riding to death. And the song is really nice and suited what was happening really well. Thank goodness there’s an official relationship, LeonxCathy, and the fact that it’s supposed to be a secret makes it interesting. I have a feeling that Ranka might die or something bad will happen to her, and then Altoh will visit that place where she usually sings and experience all this memory stuff. But its way to early in the series to tell, however, I just have a feeling that something along those lines will happen.

PS. I had to leave the computer on all night just to download this! Along with ROOKIES – 01 Part 1/4 and Wagaya no Oinari-sama. I’m glad Macross Frontier didn’t disappoint me! But I feel bad, I only increased my contribution to global warming T.T

the “living hair” makes my Ranka all the more adorable. Hope she wins the pageant.

Alto-hime is still as charming as ever.

oh yea, Glass making out with Leon was way too much info for my liking.

I’m still amazed that Sheryl is only 17. How does one build a personality like that at 17, let alone her body…

Oh, and don’t feel too bad about leaving your computer on for -one- night, it’s been about three months since I’ve turned mine off, aside from resets for upgrades and such.

If history tells us anything, the Miss Macross pageant is the turning point in a young girl’s life when she transforms from a cute and starstruck dreamer first to a flighty and fickle princess with no time for the boy who saved her life, then into a bottom-of-the-barrel Vegas entertainer living on donated cans of tuna while being smacked around by her manager, who happens to be her incestuous brother (or was it cousin?), and finally into a broken woman who realizes what she’s lost too late because the boy has run off with his commanding officer who treats him nicer.

And I leave my computer on all night, almost every night, usually also for downloading bittorrents. Macross is worth a little global warming. Not sure about Kamen No Maid Guy, though…

My favorite part (I don’t know if it was episode 2 or 3 as I watched them in succession) was that when Ozma and Altou we in the car Fire Bomber (Macross 7) was on the radio…I forgot the name of the song but it goes “Lets go! Tsukinuke (?) you ze yume de mitai yoake e…” etc.
I was giddy, because I have fond feelings for Macross 7/Basara :)
I like how Macross Frontier is also following the tradition of Macross 7 (I dunno if it was the case in the original) of having a weird creature pet which hangs out on the main (singing, of course) female’s shoulder. In this case Ranka’s shoulder/creature.

I also like the nods (maybe) to the original series in which the main characters get stuck somewhere during a battle, and also when the main male has to grab the main female with the robotic hand and run away to save her xD Very nice.

Ranka is truely adoreable and I hope they come out with some Macross Frontier figures of her (and Sheryl’d be nice too) soon…when (if) they do it will be a must-have for my collection! Altou is pretty, so maybe he’d translate into a figure well too hehe :)

@Setsuna-san: Haha, Ranka is more adorable that way

@Shirukii: Nani? I never knew she was 17! She looks much older

@otou-san: LOL, that makes me feel so much better

@Pure Trance: There’s a Macross 7? Never heard of it! And did you get my email yet??

@Teeif: Dogs can be cute, especially sausage dogs lol

@ blissmo – Yes, I still am thinking about my screen name, unless you think it’d be best for me to keep it recognizable, also for the “about me” bit X_X I’ll reply soon :)
As for Macross 7, it came out in the 90s, Macross Frontier takes place pretty soon after it (I think it’s a direct sequel, at least sequentially), although I am not sure how many years went by, I think 14. If you can handle 90s anime (I find that a lot of the stuff I loved back then I find boring now, or I just can’t watch it).

LOL! I can’t stand 90s anime either!! xD

Phew, I thought you didn’t get the email and was worrying lols

@ blissmo – It sucks though, because I’ll feel nostalgic about an anime and want to watch it (sometimes I buy the DVD just to have)…then I’ll watch it and get bored immediately. I really loved the stuff 10 or so years ago, but I guess my interests have changed and now it all seems really dated.

Sorry! I definately got it, I just have to get around to replying, I promise I will do it soon :o
