SOUL EATER – 06

Shinigami-sama doesn’t have a soul? (as if!)

Summary:

We actually start off in Death the Kid’s house, where we get to see the splendid symmetry of his life. The walls mirror each other by holding identical pictures, the candles are melting equally the same, and Death has remembered to fold his toilet paper perfectly; he is ready to go to school. The only problem is that he is already three hours late. The entire class has heard the rumor that Shinigami-sama’s son is coming in as a student and are busy doing more of Stein’s bogus dissections (this time it’s an endangered species of bird); however, Soul and Black Star have decided to play hooky. Black Star took Soul as his partner for the day so that they could wait out front of Shibusen for the strong new student that was skilled enough to take down Anubis and is, surprisingly, now stealing Black Star’s spotlight. Kid comes up the steps to the campus, admiring the symmetry in the architecture, and is confronted by Soul at the top. Meanwhile, Black Star is calling down to Kid from a high spike of the building, but the structure gives way under his weight resulting in a crack and a offset in symmetry. This fatal error and the demands for a duel from the two of them drive Kid into a battle stance. The fight rages on outside the classroom while Maka and Tsubaki site inside. Maka then states that Stein has to be present at the duel due to a school rule, so he and the two girls step outside to watch it. Black Star and Soul are mostly on the run from Kid’s soul bullets (Soul, having already received a point blank shot, is a little more cautious now). Stein uses this opportunity to show Maka some good cooperation between soul waves by having Maka look at the gun team’s souls. Kid and the Thompson sisters are very well teamed and adore each other as a team. Soul and Black Star decide to do some flashy team work of their own, but Soul’s scythe form just puts a cut in Black Star’s head and extremely heavy weight in his hands because of the obvious lack of effort to matching soul waves. The embarrassment is too much for Soul so he… kinda… sorta… breaks up with Black Star, but they decide to still be friends, resulting in a picturesque pink, sparkly, and bubbly scene where they run towards each other’s arms. Kid just shoot them both down for their overly homosexual action. They rush in for another attack, putting Kid on the ropes for just a second, this makes him mad.

Death the Kid continues to seemingly win and he finishes the battle by transforming into his true self, releasing an attack called Death the Canon. Doctor Frankenstein has Maka examine Death the Kid’s soul and when she does; his soul wave length is perfect with Liz and Patty’s. This is why Kid is stronger than the rest of the Meisters his age, especially because his team is made up of a perfect group. However, Soul and Black Star start showing off their true abilities as well, but their soul wave lengths aren’t in synch, therefore they end up losing pretty badly. Soul manages to scrape off some of Kid’s hair and at the end of the match; this causes Kid to collapse in despair since he feels out of balance. Black Star is pleased that even he is able to surpass a god and Soul is reminded that he shouldn’t fight in a humiliating battle from Maka. Shinigami arrives to see how Kid is going and decides to take him home when he realizes what has happened. Out of curiosity, Maka analyses Shinigami’s soul as well, but doesn’t see anything. She concludes that he doesn’t have a soul; however, a yellowish and translucent spirit covers the entire area of Shibusen.

Thoughts:

This episode was truly hilarious, especially when Soul and Black Star were running towards each other with the pink glossy background. Towards the end, however, for some reason I felt it was lame. I can’t exactly put my thoughts in words, but the part when Shinigami appeared and everyone was in a sort of line and said “hi” together, somewhat reminded me of a kid’s show or something. Don’t get me wrong, I loved this episode like I loved all the other episodes, and the action was as brilliant as the first episode, but so long as the series keeps delivering more of Death the Kid, then I’m okay. Other than that, I have nothing else to say except that it was a fun watch.

I must agree with blizzy that something seemed lame about this episode (towards the end particularly). I did enjoy the episode and the little jokes in it, but when I was watching it I was convinced that I had downloaded the censored/cut version. Somehow it seemed childish at parts to me. I will comment that Death the Kid is overpowered and I love it and that Shinigami-sama has no right having a soul of such ridiculous proportions… way too epic. LOL. All in all, this show is getting progressively better. This was actually the first that I had watched that I hadn’t read the chapter for so I’m gunna have to get back on that manga. (Mostly because I like knowing what will happen in the show I’m blogging.) Anyways, I think I speak for the both of us in saying that we are looking forward to the next episode.
