SOUL EATER – 09: The Sword of Excalibur is not a Sword at all

Soul might become a Demon God.

Soul lies in his critical condition, but in his mind things are only more hectic. He suffers from a terrible bad dream where he cannot place himself amongst the darkness. He finally hears Maka’s voice and swims upward through the darkness towards some light and breaks through the ground. Blood gushes up from the opening he made followed by a scream from Maka. He didn’t burst through the flooring, he had come out of Maka’s stomach, much to their surprise.

Outside of Soul’s dream, Maka tries to calm the screaming Soul. She calls for Nurse Medusa, but Soul assures her that he was just having a bad dream. Medusa steps back behind the curtain, knowing the wicked truth. Soul has indeed been infected with Ragnarok’s black blood; he hsa now become another one of her experiments.

Maka decides to head home for the day, but before leaving she tries to see if Soul wants her to get anything for him other than a pair of clean underwear from home. He tells her no and then lets her know that he is in his current state because of what he did; she shouldn’t feel bad. She just meekly walks out the door and beats herself up for letting Soul worry about her while in his current situation. This is when Death Scythe, knowing what Maka is going through, comes up and asks her if she wants to go watch the sunset with him.

Black Star is having troubles of his own. Sid-sensei has decided to punish Black Star for not having collected any souls whatsoever. Black Star just brushes it off and lets Sid know that he is taking remedial classes too, but Sid won’t let his student off so easily. Black Star shouldn’t be so behind in collecting souls since he is at the top in strength, so he must organize clean and organize library as a punishment. Of course, he doesn’t take this job seriously. Black Star finds a manga and plops his butt down on top of one of the huge piles he should be organizing. He then notices Kid in front of him and questions whether he is being punished too. Kid replies with a negative and lets Black Star know that he is there for the book that Black Star is currently sitting on, so he shifts his weight and hands over the good on Excalibur. After hearing a short version of the legend of Excalibur’s greatness, Black Star decides that he wants to pull the sword out, become a king, and be “big.” Kid just wants to get the strength and witness the beautiful symmetry of the weapon. Stein interrupts the two of them during their day dreaming. He lets them know that he couldn’t do it. They know know that if Stein couldn’t pull the weapon out, then it must be a terribly powerful weapon (meaning they just want it even more).

Maka and Death Scythe are on the roof looking at the sunset. Death Scythe is trying to keep Maka entertained by poking fun at the sun’s facial expression, but Maka just stands there reading a book. His attempts ar pleasing her just keep hitting road blocks when Maka asks him what he thought about Mama. He answers that he loves her, so Maka asks why he would always cheat on her; he cannot come up with a decent answer.

Black Star and Death the Kid are on their big journey to go get Excalibur. They stand at the base of a waterfall, at the top, there lies a cave that holds the legendary sword. Kid gets his flying skateboard out and soars to the top. Black Star angrily storms up the cliff side, and when he reaches the top he finds Kid hanging from a limb over the water. Kid demands that Black Star carry him so that his pant legs won’t get wet from the water in the cave. After denying to carry Kid, we see that Black Star gave in and let Kid ride on his back. Kid holds an umbrella to protect from the water droplets from above as Black Star treks through the stream. They come across a cute little fairy and ask her if Excalibur is up ahead. When she hears the name, her cute expression goes away and her face suddenly looks disgusted. They finally come into the chamber of Excalibur. The sword is stuck in the floor just as they expected. Kid leaps up and admires the splendid symmetry and during his rambling on how great the sword and its power is, Black Star pulls it out. Kid demands a do over, so Black Star puts the sword back in the hole, confident that Kid won’t be able to pull it out since he isn’t the hero. Kid yanks the sword out and Black Star gets upset when, suddenly, Excalibur speaks to them. They are amazed that it can talk and are drowned in it’s dazzling glow, but when the light fades away, they see an odd looking little creature in front of them.

Death Scythe informs Maka that the purpose of Shibusen is to prevent another creation of a Demon God and warns her that Chrona is by far the closest one to becoming it, although there are many Meisters out there who are capable of turning into a Demon God. In the past, the Masters were never allowed to let their Weapons devour human souls, however, one master secretly continued feeding his weapon human souls, thus resulted in the awakening of the Demon God. Death Scythe then tells Maka that Soul is infected with Ragnarok’s blood. In the meantime, Sid visits the library to see how Black Star is going but is saddened to see that Tsubaki is there cleaning up the place instead. She reassures him that she loves cleaning and Sid asks Stein where Black Star is. Stein replies that he and Kid are searching for Excalibur.

Elsewhere, Excalibur decides to let Kid and Black Star become his Masters after recounting his history. When they grasp this opportunity, however, they toss it away and put Excalibur back in the ground. They walk off while Stein tells Tsubaki that anyone’s wavelength can match with Excalibur’s, but the personalities will never be able to clash. At school, Soul meets up with Black Star and Kid. Kid notifies Black Star that they’re some students laughing at him when they’re abruptly interrupted by Maka, who asks them to quickly come to class. When Kid and Black Star step into the room, they are shocked to see that Excalibur has left a mark.

He’s not reading it upside down, is he?

Too cuuuuute~~!!

Thoughts:

This was a very “filleriffic” episode, or so that’s what I felt when I watched it. The beginning got me hooked into the episode straight away, especially when Soul crawled out of Maka’s stomach; their expressions were priceless! I don’t know what Kid and Black Star’s problem is with Excalibur – I thought he was very adorable, especially in the scene when he was putting on his cute pajamas. Excalibur’s conversation with the two boys was seriously hilarious, and I never noticed that Excalibur didn’t wear a set of underpants. Maka’s part in this episode was extremely gloomy, but then all of a sudden Kid and Black Star would appear with the usual hilarity to ensue. The episode seemed very unbalanced in a way, with a mixture of sadness/confusion and humour. On the other hand, I thought that the entire episode was great fun. The only question I still have about this episode is what Kid and Black Star would’ve done if they actually accepted Excalibur as their Weapon. Did this mean that they were going to abandon their own weapons? Next week looks like Black Star is going to get some more action with Tsubaki.

PS. I wish [gg] fansubs would keep up with this series instead of Code Geass. I mean, the subs are out hours after the RAW release.

During my time of writing up my portion of this review, I was only able to complete little over one half of the episode because of technical issues. I only had to write about the first half, so I thought it would be safe to just go ahead and write it all up and finish it later. My technical issues were with the stupid Tadashi fansub release. the [gg] release was a high res mkv, so my computer crapped out ad decided that it was too stupid to operate such a great show so I waited on the Tadashi release, but when I got that one, by the time Death Scythe is explaining the gloomy past behind Demon Blades and Death Gods, the video would start over at the intro. Phooey!

The majority of the episode that I did see was pretty good, The first part with Soul’s nightmare was probably the best. I’ll agree with blizzy that it hooked me for the episode. I think there has to be some sort of message in that dream too, because Soul came out of Maka’s body (Ragnarok comes out of Chrona’s body, eh… maybe? idk).

Personally, parts of the Black Star and Kid segment just cracked me up. Like when Black Star was in the library and stupidly assumed that anyone else who walked in was also being punished. Just shows how much libraries are used lol. But the best part ever was Kid’s riding on Black Star’s back. The writing right there perfectly fit Kid’s character. The whole bit about being attacked from above and below and not expecting such an obstacle. That was just downright hilarious. It’s a legendary sword and he’s worried about water and can only assume that Black Star is too so he reassures him that he will protect them from above with his umbrella. Priceless!

PS. [gg] needs to release SD version too.

The problem with Excalibur would be that yes, he is adorable, but only when you’re not dealing with him. I’d say the faces that Black star and Kid made in the end would’ve been justified in that sense! xD

Also, If they did accept Excalibur I’d think that they’d just end up using another weapon, like Kid using Patty and Liz.

If you were deaf, Excalibur would be so amazing and overpowered.

[gg] have spoiled me with their lightning fast subs and now I shall have greater expectations of Tadashi :p.
The best part has got to be the reactions to the “Have you met Excalibur?” questions: <_< (or something like that)
And Excalibur is a lying, arrogant, persistence pest who is even more annoying than Black Star (and THAT’S saying something).
But with the cane he reminds me of Jiminy Cricket and I love’d that guy ^_^

The Excalibur Sword is the legendary weapon of King Arthur himself. Imagining owning a replica of the weapon used by on of the greatest medieval fighters of all time. Well that’s how I felt when I got my hands on my copy from http://www.replicaswordsource.com. Even up to this day I get goose bumps from just holding this piece in my hands.
