SOUL EATER – 11: Tsubaki, the Scentless Flower, is Pierced in the Heart

Fey Blade Mode!

Short Summary:
The people of the town continue bashing up Black Star and demanding him to leave, but he remains put and waits for Tsubaki’s return instead. In the meantime, Tsubaki and Fey Blade break into a fight while Shinigami-sama and the others watch from the mirror. Dr. Stein explains that Tsubaki is trying to absorb her brother’s soul, while on the other hand, Fey Blade is trying to take control over her. Maka is saddened when Dr. Stein informs them that chances of Tsubaki winning is very low since she’s on her own, but Soul reassures them that Tsubaki has Black Star with her. Tsubaki is stabbed through the chest by Fey Blade while Black Star asks aloud if Tsubaki still remembers the day they first met. Tsubaki wakes up and defeats Fey Blade, and she and Black Star go back to Shibusen where they are welcomed by everyone. Tsubaki can now transform into a new weapon called Fey Blade Mode, but unfortunately Black Star can’t use it yet.

Thoughts:
This episode was definitely better than the ones I’ve seen so far. Tsubaki was given a huge character development and I have no idea why some people find Black Star annoying — okay, maybe in real life he will be, but I love his confidence. The action was “decent” but I can’t say anything beyond that. I especially enjoyed it how Tsubaki kept getting stabbed, slashed and wounded — not that I hate her, of course. By far, she’s one of the most intriguing characters and the relation of her name to the scentless flower is interesting too. The thing is, in most anime I’ve seen, the main characters hardly get wounded, or when they do, it doesn’t really seem to affect them at all. However, in this episode, Tsubaki got so hurt she could barely stand at one point. It was nice to see that her strength came from Black Star and their friendship, and their encounter was cute as well. Next week it looks like more “bad-ass” characters, Black Star will steal some more spotlight, but at least we’ll see more of Medusa. So far, all my thoughts based on SOUL EATER have been rather neutral, so I hope the series delivers a wow-factor soon!

The second picture looks like Maya Fey from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney when she’s having a good cry. And in that game that happened often.

It was one of my favourite episodes yet, but I thought it was a little too unrealistic that she was stabbed multiple times and basically dead, but she still ended up winning!

@lostty: Well, it was technically her soul that suffered this damage – it’s like being hurt in a dream, I imagine. Only if you die in that dream, you end up being a puppet for a swordsmaster-going-on-demon-god.
Really enjoyed this episode, but that might be because I am in love with Tsubaki, and not actually because the action was kickass, animation almost sharper than usual, and the soundtrack maximized for great effect.
Black Star is excellent replacement-Kamina in this Post-TTGL era.
