SOUL EATER – 14: Study Like You’ve Never Studied Before

Summary:
The crowd cheers for Maka and Soul, who is about to be transformed into a Death Scythe after the pair have finally collected 99 souls and one of a witch’s. Suddenly, Maka wakes up from her sweet dream and Soul approaches her to tell her she’ll be late for school. At Shibusen, Dr. Stein reminds them that their Ultra exam is going to take place in three days from now, and he will be the one writing up the test. Maka is determined to get first place and defeat Ox, another student from her class, and aim for the highest score like her mother. Black Star learns from Soul that whoever gets the highest mark from the Ultra test means that they will be able to turn their Weapon into a Death Scythe.
Every one returns home and studies extremely hard, while Death Scythe continues to send Maka “good luck on the test” auras, and Blair tries to find something to do. When the test day arrives, Soul is caught cheeting and so Sid strips him of his clothes. Death the Kid can’t even finish his name because the letter ‘K’ is too crookied. Patty creates a giraffe out of the test papers, and her sister tries to pull a single strand of hair off Ox. Maka double checks her test several times. Black Star was arrested for trying to steal the test papers last night, and Tsubaki manages to do well during the exam. The results are out and Maka gets first place while Ox is second. Death Scythe gives some money to Blair and asks her to hand this over to Maka for him. She accidentally spends it on something else, so when Maka receives her present, Blair had accidentally turned it into an underwear set.
Thoughts:
No doubt this episode was just about having fun, but it was definitely hilarious. Unlike episode 12 where it focused on building up for the next plot, this episode was a filler, or at least, had a filler vibe to it. Not much I can say about this one, but the new ED is totally awesome, Death the Kid is so adorable, and next week it looks like he’ll be getting all the beautiful spotlight with Chrona, which is something I’m really looking forward to. Regarding tests, I’m sort of like Maka in terms of aiming for the top. I don’t always get the highest mark, but I do study for the tests and manage to get somewhere at the top of the class. I usually cram it all in or leave it until the last minute to study for a test because I’m usually confident that I’ll pass, and passing is all I’m really concerned about at the moment lols.
Well maybe your grades would go higher if you had a parent waving their hands at you trying to send test taking power or whatever Maka’s dad was doing :). Probably closer to Tsubaki in doing fine on the tests but I’m not going to be battling with people for the top spot.
I love the way Maka saw her name as numebr one and then just walked away like “Yeah, I did it, no big deal”. I was completely expecting her to jump for joy.
I wish I didn’t have to study so hard for average grades…

Maybe I wasn’t clear … I get A+s and usually I get one mark wrong … but I still get pissed lols. And my parents always tell me to study and they make me play the piano when I clearly don’t want to lols.

I hate exams. To tell the truth, I actually care a lot about doing real well for exams but when i get the good grades, it doesn’t make me any happier.

Oh I picked up on that. Just adding in that with the bonus help Maka’s dad was adding would put you over the top with max scores :).
Also thought she’d do something more when she saw the top score. But guess it was just a satisfaction feeling of reaching where her mother did.
No wonder the paper ripped though. He spent the entire time writing and re-writing parts of his name to make it perfect. Gotta love the flaws of some of these characters.
Tsubaki’s expressions are always priceless.

Just out of curiosity, who’s following this having already read the manga? I can’t bring myself to watch this since the anticipation factor is gone. =(
It’s a shame though, since the animation is so well done.

This was the funniest episode yet, by far! I agree with you that the new opening is so good! When it comes to tests, I don’t aim for the top, I just want to pass with a reasonable mark. I always study for my tests the night before, I just can’t bring myself to study ahead of time!

I think Maka realized that she was really far away from her friends in terms of grades. Maybe thats why she walked away.
