SOUL EATER – 18: Dance, My Pretties, Dance!

Near-kiss!

Summary:

This episode puts us back on track and makes us drool over the preview to 19. In short, it’s a decent set up episode.

It starts off with Elka bringing Medusa the the briefcase from the lab which we see to be filled with the black blood substance; Medusa, Chrona (Ragnarok), Free, and Elka are preparing for a big battle at Shibusen. However, things at Shibusen aren’t near as grim. They are having an anniversary banquet for the school and everyone is dressed up and ready for a good time. Soul looks mega cool, Black Star is a slob, and Kid attempts at a perfect speech to follow his father’s introduction but is cut short from out slobby assassin. Then everyone dances to that adorable song that Excalibur performed to, but Soul stays out on the balcony. Maka tries to get Soul to talk about what’s bothering him, but he doesn’t feel like it so she asks him to dance, but Soul side steps this too by letting Maka’s father dance with her.

Meanwhile, Medusa is conducting an assault on the campus, but is interrupted by Stein who seems excessively drunk and wants to dance. She and Stein begin to dance and Stein starts to interrogate her on her activities and about the Demon God that is sealed beneath the campus. Both of them have murderous intent towards the other. But then Medusa turns it around by asking Stein to join her as she leans in for a kiss.

Just as Medusa leans forward to kiss Stein, a wounded Sid arrives and warns everyone to escape. Our main characters rush to his aid, including Stein, only to look back and discover Medusa disappearing into the night. In the meantime, Free begins working on a spell that produces an Independent Cube, which is a special barrier that will lock everyone inside the party for only an hour. Hastily executing the resonance of souls with his Weapon, Sid manages to summon a tunnel below each of the characters’ feet. This takes them downstairs to Shibusen so that they don’t get locked within the cage.

Outside, the Mizune family arrive as Chrona and Ragnarok escorts them to help Medusa in destroying Death City, while Elka feels guilt eating at her when she remembers how she had to lie to them in order to bring them on her side. Stein takes in the situation and explains to Black Star, Maka and Death the Kid and their Weapons that the reason why Shinigami-sama cannot leave Shibusen is because they have the Demon God sealed within this building. Medusa is planning on reviving this monster, therefore, the group need to go underground and find it before she gets there.

Thoughts:

I wasn’t entirely into this episode, mostly because I recognized it as a set up episode. I was only into this one because of the quaint actions between the students, however I was squealing every time I saw Elka. For some reason I’ve taken a liking to that character. But for the most part, this episode got me pumped up for what we are about to see. I mean seriously! This next fight will be truly epic! That fact stated, Sid needs to take one of the kid’s weapons cause he’s wipe the floor with Medusa wielding a black blood Soul.

Also disregard Blissmo’s following comment about Medusa’s “ugliness.” That is a misconception on her part. We all know Medusa is hella hawt! :P

What a blast this episode truly was! I was totally engrossed, especially because nothing seemed draggy. After the episode, I was quite speechless, and one of the things I just adore about Soul Eater is that it’s well-paced. Already, we get to see the sealed Demon God in the next episode and it’s only been eighteen amazing episodes of this series so far. Black Star was so adorable at the beginning of the festival, and it was lovely seeing all our characters in new outfits. When Medusa leaned in to kiss Stein, I was wondering why he didn’t back off, or perhaps he was seduced by her ugliness. It’s also a nice thing to see him overcoming his fear of her and becoming quite the scary man himself.

Unlike some shows where one person does something nice for another, but the other person doesn’t realize, Soul learned on his own that Maka had provided food for him. It was really sweet too. The people of Shibusen seem quite stupid sometimes, like acting so surprised when they discovered Medusa to be a disguised nurse. All I could think of was “finally!”, but nevertheless, the ending was extremely cool :D

Also Medusa is not hawt. Blair is. So is Tsubaki but she is not comparable to Blair.

PS: LOL I closed the strikethrough using / and it struck out Mikoto’s comment as well. Failage.

I have been living under a rock. It wasn’t until NOW that I’ve realized there was a Soul Eater anime and all the links referring to it on the forums and blogs I frequent. ._.; Loved the manga, and the anime looks fun. Definitely going to check it out immediately.

Random changing from banquet attire to fighting uniform is NOT to be questioned on this blog ever. EVER! It is always, and will always be, overly awesome.
