SOUL EATER – 28/29: Loli Snake, Angry Spider

Black Star is manpower!

Episode 28:

I see that blissmo cheaped both you the reader, and me the co-writer into a post about 2 episodes Soul Eater in one post instead of 1 post per episode like God intended it to be. Don’t get me started on our previous seven-episoder abomination. But the real atrocity here is the fact that she stole episode 29 from me when she very well knows that episode 28 can be summed up in like 10 words (I probably won’t write only 10 just so I can prove her and myself wrong) and that she knows how much I like lolis and Medusa. The mere thought of combining both lolis and Medusa to make one being was just a vision that came to me in restless dreams, episode 29 made that dream come true and blissmo either fears what I would’ve written or she just is that maniacal and wretched that she wanted to steal it from me.

Now that I actually got all that out of the way, let’s turn out attention to the star of episode 28, Angela! Yes I know episode 28 is all about “Black Star avenging Maka’s paralysis, while focusing on Mifune’s pedophilia,”  (Count ‘em, that’s 10 words, bitches!) but I want to focus on my hero, Angela. Yes, yes, I know. Mifune joined the “Dark Side,” Black Star is acting weird and raising my suspicions towards Maka x Black Star love, and that Azusa crossbow Death Scythe was clearly using wall hacks (Ban list plz!), but Angela is the real hero in my mind. Anyone that can stand next to that terrifying mosquito freak and happily play while ignoring that nose is truly worthy of my affection.

Thoughts:

Okay, seriously. I don’t quite understand Mifune’s reasons for wanting to help Arachnophobia, I get that it has something to do with Angela possibly that he only thinks that a world that would accept Angela is a world plunged into madness. So maybe I can understand why Mifune wants to help them, but he knows it’s wrong. I want to see him join Shibusen as a combat skills teacher or something, possibly as Black Star’s personal tutor. I just can’t see anyone in Shibusen hurting Angela just because she’s a witch. I mean, she’s a cute witch that doesn’t harm anyone.

As for episode 29, I was kind of surprised to see that Medusa and Arachne were calling each other sisters and such. The only reason I am surprised is because there is no possible way any anime subber could mess up the word for mother and the word for sister because, in this case, my episode 27 subs clearly lied to me. I think I was mostly happy to see Elka again. I would have hated to see her disappear as a reoccurring character in this anime. By the way, blissmo is totally going to flaunt that age old stereotype that women like sensitive guys in about 4 paragraphs. Don’t let her trick you!

Episode 29:

While in snake-form, Medusa is confronted by a stray dog. Immediately possessing its body, she soon decides to occupy a little girl’s body instead. Meanwhile, Sid reports back to Shinigami, who orders them to preserve Eibon’s journal. Nygas questions the reason behind this but Sid justifies that he has enough faith in Shinigami to comply to his every order. Maka recovers from the curse and is abruptly teamed up with Ox and his Weapon, along with Soul and Black Star in class to defeat Professor Stein. This is so because Stein is training them against Arachne by teaching them Team Resonance in case they encounter her in the future.

Naturally, since this is their first lesson in this area, Ox and Maka end up wounding Black Star by accident. Ox explains that it is Black Star’s fault for hindering him until they both decide to have a fair match. Of course, Stein protests against the idea but realizes that he can’t reason with them. Ox admits that he has always wanted to spar with Black Star but easily loses just as the battle commences.

Elsewhere, Medusa discovers that Arachne already knows where she is, so she goes to meet her. Arachne commends Medusa’s courage to greet her since Medusa betrayed her 800 years ago during their battle against Shinigami. One of Arachne’s servants shows Medusa out just as Mifune, Mosquito and the golem leader reveal themselves. As it turns out, Medusa has Elka spying in Arachnophobia even though Elka had been certain that was finally free. Before departing to Death City in order to re-claim something important, Medusa warns Elka that freedom cannot be bought easily.

Thoughts:

Yeah, well, besides how much I really really enjoyed Black Star and Mifune’s fight, I also really really enjoyed the the song that was inserted during their battle. Anyway, I really like Mifune, but it’s just a shame he’s on the bad side. He’d make a really good teacher though, and I suppose in the end he will become a teacher of Shibusen. Besides the kickass fight scene, Eibon’s invention of taking away human morals looked like trash put together. But it was pretty, in a sense. Black Star was really adorable in this episode, and I don’t know why people find him annoying—-if anything, he’s sweet: to have gone so far to avenge Maka. Hey, every girl likes a sensitive guy.

With regards to episode 29, I initially thought we were going to see a flashback of Medusa’s past, but it turns out that that wasn’t the case. Like JLeeson, I also really like Arachne because she has this awesome seductiveness to her. I thought the fight between Mr. Mozzie and what’s-his-face was pretty pointless, but funny because Mr. Mozzie’s techniques are ridiculous. I knew the Team Resonance was going to turn out bad too but I honestly thought that at least Maka and Black Star could do better than that. Next week looks really promising though, especially because we get to see more of Death the Kid!

    Mozzie and Whats-his-name LOL. Giriko.

    Arachne is hot. Hot. Hot.

Mifune requires the protection of Arachnophobia for Angela because he believes Shibusen’s natural enemies, as they have been doing for all of their history, other than preventing the revival/creation of the Kishin (or new one) is to eliminate witches. Despite her age, Angela is still a witch, hence Mifune’s willingness (albeit weak) to allow Arachnophobia to “protect” Angela and he to become part of their organization.

I foresee that changing in the distant future thanks to something that I cannot spoil.

@JLeeson: Damn, you know me too well. I also quickly wrote the summary for episode 29 ‘cos it was all still fresh in my mind. You DID say, after all, that whoever wrote first got to choose what to right, correct?

@Panther: But Mifune can protect Angela on his own!

@21st Century Digital Boy: That was AGES ago. I still need to change the descriptions sometime soon

Mifune’s 12×2 slashes was so cool I jumped from my chair. I’m a sucker for cool moves.

And loli Medusa is… uhh… I can’t tell you right now.

Wait, my friends already label me as a lolicon.

Okay, well in regards to why Mifune is joining Arachnophobia… Shibusen hunts witches. It trains weapons, all of whom’s eventual goal is to kill a witch and eat their soul to become death scythes. There being 8 already, that means at least 8 witches have been eaten by Shibusen, very likely more.

It is not so much the world that can’t accept witches (heck, take the hat off and you could just disguise yourself…) but Shibusen in particular. He knows that Arachnophobia does not care because the leader is a witch. That said, if he knew more about Arachne’s past (like how the demon weapons were created…) he would not want Angela anywhere NEAR her.

As you can see in the flashback (hey, 28 had some of his past, if you want more it’s not in 29 but wait for later…) witches get hunted and stuff. There’s part of this in ep 2 when you first meet them too, with Alcapone wanting to capture her.

You can’t blame him for not trusting Shibusen. #2 had Black Star on a mission to kill her, he decided not to but Mifune could think that was just a single exception.

Arachnophobia provides protection. In return for helping to protect them, they help him protect Angela. They understand that his protecting her takes priority over them, just as he understands that they would protect themself before her. But they each secondarily look out for each other’s interests.
