To Aru Majutsu no Index – 02: First Electricity, Now Fire?

Fire’s got nothing on Touma’s primary hand!

So at this point, once again, I am 1 episode behind. Having, already seen the next episode, I won’t ruin anything in this post. I’m beginning to question just how this crazy, ridiculous, hacking right hand of Touma works, or perhaps I am curious as to just how this magic works. As we see in this episode, fire magic just doesn’t seem to work in any way whatsoever.

Summary:

So as the title and this magician’s prominent red hair say: Touma is going to be dealing with a lot of fire in this episode. But of course, no high level evil mage is going to think “Hey, my magic won’t work on this kid, maybe I should carry a gun or a knife.” No instead, even when they realize that his right hand will stop all magic attacks, they will continue to cast magic like the top dog pro that they are!

The whole reason the mage was able to follow Index to where she was is because she came back for the hood to her robes. However, now that Touma had broken the magic in Index’s robes, she was easy prey for the man that calls himself Steel Magnis and Faltis 931. I don’t really know why he wants two names or why the second has numbers in it, but that’s all fine, he wants to be called Faltis 931 for now so I can abide. Faltis figures out that Touma has a hacker hand when he wastes his good cigarette to create a large fire ball blast. What he follows up with is just 10 kinds of confusing awesome. Faltis uses his high level magic to summon a fire elemental, the king of witch hunting, Inocentius.

This beats heating the doorknobs in Home Alone.

This is where everything gets all too confusing. As soon as Inocentius is summoned, we see that his heat affects pretty much everything. The doorknobs get white hot and melt a bit, but Touma and the wizard don’t feel a thing. I’m willing to set that aside because the fight that follows is rather awesome.

Touma has already proved that he can nullify magic, but this elemental regenerates his flames faster than they disappear. The trick to defeat the monster is that Touma has to destroy all the runes that bind Inocentius to that place. Turns out, the floor underneath them is plastered in post-it notes with magical symbols on them. That clever man came prepared! I wonder if he came with a book of post-its and a marker and colored the symbols on the spot and pressed down each and every adhesive paper or if he had some other way to do this ahead of time. Oh well, Touma uses his conducive abilities and decides the sprinklers will destroy the ink on all the papers. So, one elevator ride later, a brief explanation of his his genius plan came to play, and a swift punch to the face solved all their problems.

Well, not all of the problems. Index is still bleeding and by her explanation only people who cannot use psychic powers can use the healing spell in her knowledge. So Touma goes to probably the only non-psychic person her knows. Turns out, it’s his loli teacher.

Thoughts:

This show is just too cool for it’s own good. Except when it lacks in the makey sensey area. As I sad before, Inocentius’ flames affect everything around it to a certain degree. Yea, Faltis says that Inocentius is made of 3000 degree flames. That’s where this doesn’t make sense. If Touma touches a hot stove with his right hand, will it burn? I just want to know the exact limitations of this hand or his. Hopefully things will get explained even further.

Life is 100x cuter in bunny pajamas!

So, his loli teacher, Tsukuyomi Komoe is indeed an older person. I thought it was too hilarious when Touma came into her apartment and there was a full ash tray and beer cans littered all over the place. I knew she wasn’t some sort of 12 year old genius teaching, but it sure was a surprise to see this. She might be one of my new favorite characters. Given that she gets some hilarious parts in upcoming episodes.

    I think the show is average.
    What the hell was Faltis doing when Touma was busy with Innocentius?
    Why weren’t the fire sprinklers set off by the flames? Fire sprinkler systems are heat sensitive, they activate when exposed to sufficient heat.
    Why wasn’t anything else affected by the flames?
    Why didn’t anyone in that apartment open their door to check out what was going on, or evacuate?
    Stuff like that just irks me. Only thing it has is nice animation and moeblobs.

    Next episode is just plain boring. I’m probably going to drop it, but will continue reading posts to see if it redeems itself later on.

    I love Komoe as well! She’s my favourite character so far in this series, although I really like Touma too because he has awesome lazy eyes. I must admit though, how the bad guy lost was really pathetic. Plus, the bad guy was also really stupid. Everyone knows that ink will be washed away due to water. I also expected more action.

    Index is Chiwa Saito love~

    Well anyway, physics and the laws of nature should be disregarded when it comes to anime fights. Just sit back and enjoy the spectacle.

    lol, those’re some of the few things I didn’t want to point out in this post because I already said the show was my favorite of the season and I didn’t want to seem like I was going back on my word.
    But yea, he also fell off a building and rolled onto a bike rack and was unharmed – don’t forget that one!

    @blissmo
    You’re just as tempted as I am to go get bunny pajamas, aren’t you?

    @TokiDoki
    LMFAO I looooove her biting, it makes her seem so immature, like that’s her final statement in any argument

    @Omisyth
    No! You need at least 3 gym badges to control Inocentius!

    Gotta say, I loved the first episode, with the exception of the magician at the end, all the character intros were unique and funny. If the show concentrates more on the characters and the offbeat comedic and dramatic interaction, I think it will be great. If it focuses on battles, though, it’ll become just another monster-of-the-week, in which case I’ll drop it after five eps.

    As for Innocentius’ flame, anime physics often defy comprehension. He should’ve fried his own runes, as well as set off the sprinklers, but he’s sooo able to control his flame that he can melt a doorknob, yet leave no soot on the walls.

    Still, I like the style, the animation, and the bunny pjs., might get some for my wife!
