do not be fooled – its hideous form, illuminated by the righteous light of Jesus

The elusive meaning of lolikitsune is frightening by the sheer depth of its possibilities, it has killed thousands of archaeologists and scholars for millennia.

But now, we can finally interpret this as lol ik its un e, or, lol, I know, its un e.

Such is the message LK decided to offer us in his handle. The lolikitean cryptology proves difficult to master, for anyone able to understand its true meaning has thus inextricably sold their soul to Jason Miao, the lolikitean theological equivalent to Beelzebub.

But you ask, what is the cipher? None other than Icystorm’s ball sack. Its sweat proves an invaluable gravitational lens, much like how a black hole functions, in that you can see into the future by way of superluminal circumnavigation of Einstein’s theory of general relativity. It appears LK has presented unto us the technology of gods.

“inchooka lukaohnoonga inchhoonguh fwarsri dinka pleahbleaurh” thus spoke icystorm

When I saw into the future, I saw the true of meaning of lol ik its un e. The archaic usage of the medieval Spanish un and the Sanskrit e indicated a polyglot meaning that even Joyce could not fathom. But when I peered further into the meaning, I discovered e was not a typical e, but a mathematical symbol. Yes, another meaning of lolikitsune had appeared, it was lol ik its un 2.71828183. By this I was truly baffled. When I finally accumulated enough of Icystorm’s ball sweat to see far enough into the future, I discovered I had, in fact, mis-translated the mystical Vishnu Reincarnation Dance of Life into the equation. Yes! 2.71828183 was not precisely a number, per se, but an algorithmic substitute for a series of Neanderthal hymns that told me to reconfigure the lolikitsune rosetta stone. It turned out to be…

lol, I know, I tsun e

And behold almighty Jesus, tsun appears. But I had yet another premonition evoked by a epileptic seizure through an overdose of Icystorm scrotum perspiration. The e was only allotrophic! And so it turned out to be…

lol, I know, I tsuny

No, despite popular belief, LK was not a Sunni. We are dealing with the connections between prehistoric Lolikiteanism, Hinduism and modern Japan. I would have never guessed that altering the astronomical arc length between the Hindu consellation Dhanwantari and the Shinto deity Aji-Suki-Taka-Hi-Kone by six parsecs would alter the course of history such the unholy union of lolikitsune and tsundere were possible. Over the course of history, though, the riddle had been solved.

lol, I know, I am a tsundere

I couldn’t take any pictures myself because of copyright issues with the games at the Game On exhibition, so here’s some Google impressions of what the exhibition looks like.

Here is Donkey Kong and Galaxian. I love Galaxian and play it often, whereas I recall spending hours completing the Donkey Kong game in order to progress in Donkey Kong 64.

There were plenty of old arcade games like this in the Game On exhibition as the exhibition is a showcase of the history and future of video gaming. I got to play on a few of these but didn’t get a very high score. Discs of Tron was another game I tried, and I found it entertaining but somewhat overrated. It’s like a throwing disc game where you generally have to hit the other guy off the platform, but you have to make sure you don’t get knocked off yourself.

This exhibition reminds me how annoying old arcade games used to be as I played them when I was a kid exploring the back of Timezone, because sometimes people would leave a game unattended in the middle of a game without finishing their game! Who does that? Clearly people at the Game On exhibition do, because there were plenty of paused games on consoles like the PS2 (Odin Sphere was an example of an abandoned and lonely game, as was the Dreamcast Tennis game). The Dreamcast looked so lonely and neglected, crying out for love. But it was playing a crappy tennis game so it got none. T_T

Oh Sega Dreamcast, you always did lose out…

While I was at the Game On exhibition I tagged along with a Romanian guy who was one of my brother’s dorm buddies. He has the biggest crush on Kasumi (the girl in blue in the middle) from Dead or Alive, so naturally he always plays as her when he plays Dead or Alive Ultimate. Even though he was getting his arse handed to him by his brother who was visiting from Romania, he insisted that Kasumi was awesome. Still, she has less dignity than Chun-Li from Street Fighter II Turbo, which I had a go at playing as Chun-Li with my brother who was playing as Ryu. My brother handed my arse back to me too, but not only that, he called Chun-Li a slut just to knock me off my SNAG guard.

I mean how is Chun-Li a slut compared to Kasumi from Dead or Alive? Chun-Li has dignity, and is awesome without having to expose too much chest.

I got the chance to play a real Game and Watch instead of just my newly acquired second hand copy of Game and Watch Gallery Advance. Sadly to say, Game and Watch Gallery Advance makes the Game and Watch games a hell of a lot easier to play than the original format. Donkey Kong on Game and Watch is a pile of donkey doo, at least on the original version. The presentation of the handheld in the exhibition was poorly lit because most of the playable handhelds featured were backlit, like the DS Lite, PSP and Game Boy Advance SP. The Game and Watch was left to rot in the dark by comparison, and I might have been able to play the damn thing had I better lighting.

I played some Final Fantasy VII, only to find that the graphics suck. Boy do the graphics suck, the story is great, but boy do these graphics suck. I mean look at the guy on the left’s arms, he looks like he has Elephantiasis or something.

After a round of Doom on an authentic Windows 95 PC, me, my brother and his dorm buddies decided to wrap it up with a try at the Steel Battalion mecha simulator. It was all your Gundam nightmares come true!

Who the hell can control 40 buttons? You’d need to be a hentai tentacle monster to play this!

Well that’s it for my Game On exhibition coverage, hope you enjoyed it. The exhibition was held at the State Library of Queensland and you can see it until February next year.

Sometimes, love em or hate em, there are shows you just have to watch.

Just as it is essential to eat certain healthy foods to maintain life, and it is essential to study if you want to score well on tests, there are certain anime that, as an anime fan, are essential to watch. (shit analogy, I know.) They aren’t necessarily shows everyone will love, as there’s really no show that everyone will love, but are shows you’d have to give at least a try lest you miss outon something you’d potentially love. In this post I will not be mentioning any Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, or GAINAX shows because, well, that’s just too obvious. Here are some other anime that anyone and everyone should give a shot for one reason or another (in no real order).

1. Macross

I am not nearly as qualified to talk about Macross as, say, ghostlightining, but it needs to be mentioned. Macross has influence and popularity second only to Gundam in the history of anime culture. This 80s anime from director Shoji Kawamori fused epic space battle with a romance love-triangle – a fusion that was totally alien to anime at the time. Macross, like Gundam, has spawned an assload of series over the years (though not nearly as many) and is widely regarded as a classic. The show was only just recently released in it’s original form in America thanks to copyright issues involving the dub version, Robotech. Robotech was brought to America in the late 80s (I believe) on Toonami and was a slightly different version in which both of the female leads were total bitches.

Whichever version you see, though, Macross is a show that’s hard not to love. The story is engrossing and interesting with plot elements that feel fresh even by today’s standards and classic characters you will never forget. I had first gotten into Robotech when I was a newbie anime fan years ago and even though I usually strayed away from older-looking anime I still fell in love with Robotech. I even bought some of the games, though the Gamecube ones kind of sucked (and I sucked at them). Also like Gundam, Macross is so integral to anime’s backbone that it is near impossible not to find it’s influence and references in modern shows.

2. Rose of Versailles

Most of the best anime of the 70s and 80s can be attributed to the genius directing of Osamu Dezaki (Rose of Versailles, Space Adventure Cobra, Ashita no Joe) who has since only directed the Air and Clannad movies (which is so very strange.) Somehwere in the midst of all the kids shows and space operas of the time, Dezaki directed what remains one of the most original anime ever. Well, while original for anime, the story is classic – being that of Marie Antoinette. Rose of V is a very surprising show in that it is definitively shoujo but has badass sword fights, a super-GAR heroine (who is referred to as a man so much that it’s hard not to think of her as one) and puts all the drama and catfights into historical and political context. There is a little something in this show for all viewers, and Oscar is just such an insane badass everone will have to fall in love with her (even if it makes you feel oddly gay).

3. Turn A Gundam

Telling you that you need to watch Gundam would be too obvious. When it comes to anime, Gundam is the very definition of classic. If you want an easy guide to watching Gundam, start with the original movies, move onto Zeta Gundam, and go from there on the path that unfolds. However, if you don’t really like Gundam, watch Turn A. Turn A Gundam is definitely the black sheep of the universal century gundams (if you don’t know what UC is, they are the gundam shows that all follow a story starting from the original series. the non UC Gundam shows are all the ones with pretty boys like Wing and 00.) Other than being strange for Gundam, it’s just a strange show altogether. It is set in a post-apocalypse world where society has been reset to the place we were in the 1800s, until invaders with future (or rather, past) technology come from the moon colony to reclaim earth and simultaneously, earthlings stumble upon this great old technology underground. Turn A Gundam is full of eccentric and memorable characters who create an endlessly fun experience. The show is just pure fucking chaos. Over 50 episodes there is non-stop going in circles between war, peace, and what the fuck as people continually make things better and worse at the expense of everyone. The show is full of thrills and fun and is sure to bring a smile to the viewer’s face all the time.

4. Mushi-shi

Mushi-shi is possiblyy the most well-done monster of the week show about someone who can see spirits ever made and certainly the widest appealing. Mushi-shi is a rare show that mixes a somber and melancholy experience with a fun and always amazing atmosphere. There is enough variety between episodes to never really get old and the stories are always both intelligent and amazing. Even someone who’s seen a bunch of shows about Japanese spirits and the like will be interested by the stories in this show. In addition, the main character manages to wrap a cool, mysterious atmosphere around a knowable and attractive person. Even though we aren’t given much info about Ginko early in the show, one will instantly feel like they know him and want to see more of him. The animation and art are breathtaking beyond almost any other TV-anime as well.

5. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

I’d almost say this was too obvious, especially since just about everyone has seen it, but I really wanted it on the list because many seek to discredit it’s importance, despite it possibly being the most important anime of the best five years. Haruhi is the ultimate fusion of genres and anime styles and if it was less popular I doubt there would be next to any haters. Haruhi definitely raised the bar for the current generation of anime and left everything else struggling to compare.

6. Revolutionary Girl Utena

I’d actually have a pretty tough time telling you exactly how insanely boss Utena is. For starters it is BY FAR the most well-directed and thorough anime ever created. Every damn second of it was carefully crafted with symbolism, double-meanings, and background info. The imagery is constantly creative, and the story is outright zany. The cahracters are all hilarious and fun and interesting and… and… dammit watch Utena! It’s got one of anime’s most inventive and fun soundtracks and lots of great voice acting, too. There’s like, NOTHING wrong with this show. If you don’t mind spoilers, you can read this ingenius in-depth review of it, but if you haven’t seen it, fucking take my word for it and jst go watch the damn show.

7. Otaku no Video and Genshiken

(photobucket is being strange all of a sudden)

Otaku no Video and Genshiken are defining otaku shows of two different generations. OnV, released in 1990, shows everything about the lives of otaku from the old days of worshiping Gundam and Macross and Maisson Ikoku. Genshiken is a modern version with the eroge and moe obsessed nerds of today. Both are very insightful, very worth watching, and sure to get any anime fan even deeper into their hobby as well as understanding the vulture even better. Both anime were major advancements in my fandom personally as they introduced me to more of the anime world. Besides just being fun for anime fans, tough, both are also just damn fucking good shows.

8. Cowboy Bebop

(this post will so be updated when my comp stops being a fuckstick)

This is another anime that is almost too obvious though as we move further toward 2010 more and moe anime fans have goen without seing it. Even I have not seen it in quite a while and would do damn well to rewatch it. Bebop is an episodic anime entirely in a class of it’s own. Yoko Kanno definitely eliverse the most diverse and interesting soundtrack in anime history and the show’s style is outright incomperable to anything before it and has never been matched since. It’s classic cool that really stays with you. I couldn’t even picture my anime fandom without Cowboy Debop and it’s hard to imagine that some have gone without it.

9. Escaflowne

To be honest, I really despise Escaflowne for being the most disappointing anime I have ever seen. However, I am in the extreme minority with that opinion and even though there are things I hate about the show there are others I absolutely love. It’s a perfect fusion of shounen and shoujo, mech and fantasy, and great perks like animation and music from champs (Yoko Kanno for the 3rd time on this list, she really just turns everything she touches into gold.) Escaflowne has all the makings of a classic, which is how most people will see it, as we who hate the second half are a lesser breed.

10. Haibane Renmei

I think it is pretty much mandatory that at leas tone of Yoshitoshi ABe’s works be seen by everyone, and the most accessible is certainly Haibane Renmei. This is another show that had a lot of heart and soul poured into it’s creation. For a 13 episode series, it is absolutely incredibly engrossing with a deep world that the viewer can’t help but feel like a part of. The story is riveting drama with an ending that none can find unsurprising. Every character is a world unto themselves – 13 episodes have never been so thorough. Haibane is one of the few shows I could watch again and again and just fully immerse myself in.

11. Honey and Clover

This is almost an odd choice for this list because I don’t think it has the same wide appeal as everything on this list. Hachikuro is definiteively aimed toward an older audience and is a good bit more realist than more anime. That said, you can’t beat it in terms of introspective rom-com slice-of-life mastery. Some episodes are the funniest episodes of anime I’ve ever seen, some are the most heart-wrenching, and some are the most true-to-life. It has one of the most respectible casts ever and they slowly become something like your own family as you go along. The only other show I could compare to this is Nana, but that one is way more aimed for girls whereas Hacjikuro can be enjoyed by anyone who is familiar with the ways of, well, life.

12. Martian Successor Nadesico

Finally, the most important on this list, the king of the crop, Nadesico. The definitive post-Ea mech craze anime that so brilliantly stands for everything that it is within itself. Ermm, it is what it is. Nadesico is fundamentally infallible and thus could be considered one of the greatest anime of all time. But don’t take my word for it, read this insightful quote fro the Almighty Omoikane.

“To make a lofty and senseless analogy, Nadesico is like a man’s heart. Deep, subtle, but very real. On the surface it’s superficial and it can be really funny at times, but each passing wave is just a shadow of the profound inner workings that lies beneath. The uncovering of that is what made Nadesico my favorite ever since I watched it through the first time. It managed to be funny, easy to swallow, but my mind chews on it like tough jerky, releasing plesant “flavors” each time I think back to it.”

Wiser words are rarely spoken.

So anyway, that’s my list of Absolutely Essential Anime. If you have any more you’d like to add, lets definitely discuss them in the comments.

This was my first time ever to an anime convention, so I was pretty hyped up about it that I could barely get any sleep the previous night. I tried to wake up early for this special event the next morning, but slept in an extra hour and got ready by 8 am before gathering at the station. I went with 7 freaks (no midnightrose—-only if I could show you a picture of her) to Melbourne University, and because we had no idea where we were really going, we stalked a couple of cosplayers dressed as a fox and a duck.

Basically …

I was a bit disappointed about Manifest, but I suppose that was because I had a very limited time to hang around since it was my friend’s birthday, so we kind of had to do her thing, which involves no anime whatsoever. I didn’t attend any of the special events or watch any previews—-Australia’s probably the only country that receives the latest things last. Hopefully I’ll be able to venture around Manifest more next year and actually bring some cash along. I saw a few people cosplaying as Naruto, but couldn’t really tell if they were Narutards. No one asked them for a photo—-not that I saw anyway—-so I didn’t either. I have a reputation to protect. Sadly, I didn’t see any bloggers. I mean, I wouldn’t want to meet with me either, unless I’m desperate enough to want a neck pain for the rest of the day from looking down for too long (ha-ha). I’m not actually in any of the photos because in possibly every photo I’ve been in, I’ve either blinked, my eyes are half-open, I’m looking elsewhere, or I’m smiling in this freakish way.

10:00-11:30

We arrived at 10 am and got lost for about twenty minutes. We tried reading a map, but we couldn’t figure out what all the numbers meant. At last we found the never-ending line but then this guy just came up and randomly decided to hug my friend, who was dressed as Mario. There were thousands of really good cosplayers so it made some of us, who weren’t cosplaying, look like the outcasts instead. When we finally found our guardian, who clearly had no interest in anime (he found refuge in his phone for the whole day), we did what anyone else would have done: we cut in the line. Even so, for one hour and another bloody half we waited in a long queue while some of us wandered off to take photos. Only a few minutes had passed and I was already faced with an issue: my nerves got to me. You know, with me being short and all, I don’t really have a loud voice so I tried sign-language: I just stared at a particular cosplayer from a distance until they took notice in me. That continued for a while until my friend started asking for me, which was probably really strange because I was the one holding the camera.

11:30-2:15

Okay, so we had to ask someone for directions for where we should go next until we found ourselves in this really cramped room where you get to buy … stuff. I didn’t have any money on me except 10 dollars so I brought a small Nagato figurine for 8 bucks and saved the rest for charity. I saw loads of adorable plushies and wanted a few, especially the Yoshi and colourful mushrooms, but I decided to screw it, go home and make my own (which I never got around to doing, by the way). When it was my second time around the area, someone kept poking me on the shoulder, and I was certain that the suspect knew me, but when I saw the back of his head, I couldn’t tell who it was. After shopping for a bit more, we went outside again and took heaps more photos. I only wanted to take pictures of the professional cosplayers, so that’s exactly what I did. I stumbled across midnightrose a few times, who was wearing a kimono or yukata (is there a difference?) on that day. Very pretty indeed, but she’ll kick me to death if I upload an image of her. Anyway, my friend wanted to meet some guy from the JPOP radio show in Melbourne, and when she did, believe me was the silence really awkward. Man, I live for these moments.

2:15-5:00

I had to get home before 5 or else I was in deep shit. Anyway, the guy who had been poking me turned out to be a family friend. Although the day doesn’t sound really thrilling, it was fun and I saw a lot of people who I thought would never be interested in anime. The costumes were really good, but my favourite one is the two guys dressed as characters from Final Fantasy. Everyone seemed nice, but my friend said people were calling her the slutty version of Mario for the entire day. My other friend got pissed because she unintentionally bough three Ulquiorra keyrings when she wanted an Ichigo one (she gambled with one of those toy machines). She also lost her ID card, so that just made everything worse. Eventually, she got over it, except the guy in charge of organising the cosplaying competition was really pissed and kept shouting at people. Sometimes when we asked for a photo, the cosplayers looked reluctant. Sigh. Maybe we were just too cool for them?

Teehehe …

Wow, it’s been more than a month since I decided to pull off a prank on you lot that wasn’t meant to stretch for so long but did due to lots of technical complications with my shitty ol’ computer and lack of proper planning, but I’m sure ya’ll pretty much want to strangle me in a hug right now since I am—-I mean—-we are, after all, back and alive. If it’s not so obvious, yes, Yukan’s updated to version 2 already with this sweet theme I found called Arthemia by Michael Jubel. Of course, behind-the-scenes man TokiDoki did loads of adjusting to it, but that barely took a week’s work. My initial plan was to fake our death, you know, stop everyone from posting for a while so that you’d think “HOLY F**K! WHAT’S HAPPENED?” and then bam, we return with a new theme so that you’d all be more surprised. You know I love to joke around, right?

Anyway, I’m sorry if I have upset you due to my plain stupidity or worried you sick, but the prank did half-backfire on me because I only hoped that our absence would last for a week, honestly. If there’s anyone you want to kill, it should be me because the idea was solely my idea and my idea alone. Fret not, I’m man enough to take on any kind of insult through a love email. If it helps, just imagine a bunny surviving a stampede and me looking like a total wreck because the bunny didn’t die. Speaking of which, I was installing countless uninfected programs yesterday but forgot about Photoshop, so the comics, pretty pictures, etc, will have to wait. Sorry again. Basically, my computer caught a stupid virus again so this time, I got a new computer (24″ LCD screen, people!), and I’m going to take good care of it.

I probably have a billion other things to write, like a better apology for example, but finishing that first paragraph off took me about an hour because I was lost for words–still am. That–and I’ve been youtube-ing sing-alongs from Disney films after that one day I decided to watch the kid’s channel after school. True story.

Consequently, I won’t be making as many posts as usual, and also because I’ve got exams coming up and assignments to finish, but I’ll still hang out in the blogosphere as much as possible and be the faithful commenter that I am. Well, truthfully I couldn’t care less about exams until another two years’ time, but both my sisters have managed to completely dominate the computer because when they scream, I scream, my mum screams, the next-door neighbour screams, and so forth until we get a visit from the police. It hasn’t really gotten that far yet because I give up fighting for the computer every-time my sister tells me to piss off. I know: being the middle child doesn’t really give you authority over anything besides your room and things your siblings don’t like.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been keeping up with any anime since my old computer was a major jet-lag so I really couldn’t be bothered accessing it. Besides, for the past few weeks I had an extremely busy schedule: there were parties, events and lots of sleeping that required my attendance. I did manage to follow Macross Frontier up till the last episode so you should expect a review on it from me soon (and I’ll try my best to make it good for bakaneko’s sake, my new best friend), and a post dedicated to Manifest (which was a pretty disappointing event because I had assumed it would be bigger than a cramped room). On a side-note, thanks for your loving comments because I did lose the feeling to blog for a while until I read them. Actually, you guys surprised me ‘cos you knew it was my birthday. Thanks again, although I probably don’t deserve your love anymore since this mess I created. Hate me, I don’t blame you. Or you can just be relieved. That works too.

TokiDoki will make a post regarding the new theme, but I just needed to get this out of my system first.

You don’t know how guilty I feel right now lols.

Can it live up to the wait? Never! I finally managed to get about eleven hours of source material down to a barely-listenable half hour. Here’s my notes:

Intro: The real otou-san speaks
Opening theme: “I Think I Can,” The Pillows, from FLCL. Get it? I think YU KAN!
2:40 - Jumping right into the conversation, because the first part was awkward and rough, and not in a really interesting way either.
4:00 – To all you “gentleman bloggers” (as Riex calls you), I actually DO want to have you on.
5:00 - Baka-Raptor enters True Otakudom with Evangelion
7:41 - bad edit, but here’s where it gets… good?
22:00 - Uh oh. The P-word.
23:22 - “She’s Seven!” Isn’t that the point? What does a seven-year-old know?
24:05 - Let’s get inside Baka-Raptor’s head. What’s in there? Kamen No Maid Guy, of course.
25:00 - JLeeson rants on Golgo 13.
26:50 - Baka-Raptor says, watch Garden of Sinners.
27:30 - JLeeson and otou-san say, watch Daughter of 20 Faces.
29:00 - Merciful release! Exeunt, with Maid Guy’s OP “Special Life” by Kotoko

Right now the podPress plugin is not working, so we don’t technically have a “podcast” so much as an “isolated audio file.” I hosted this little bugger on DivShare for the moment. Expect a more elegant solution in the future. You can download at this URL, by clicking the “Download original” link on the right side. Or you can use the handy-dandy Flash player below to listen in your browser.

I’ve joined the Yukan Blogging Team. I guess I’ll just write a small intro first. If you can remember seeing my site thats great but if you haven’t here it is. I started writing at the end of 2006 so its been around one and a half years now. I mainly reviewed anime and Japanese live-action dramas, however every know and then I’d also pop in a wallpaper or two. I’ve seen quite a number of anime in the past few years and have recently started to get into live-action dramas. After 29 live-action and 77 anime reviews I’ve decided to take a different approach to blogging. I’d like to thank Maestro and the AnimeBlogger team for their services, without their assistance I would not have been given the opportunity to run a website. My old blog however will stay up for development purposes. Finally I’d like to thank the Yukan Team for letting me join them, I’m sure we will enjoy writing and sharing our interests in the future.

As for what I will be writing about, it will mainly consist of non-episodic anime and live-action reviews. I’ve mentioned that one of my hobbies is creating computer graphics, so I’ll use this opportunity in being apart of the Yukan Blog to display shiny *_* and attractive banners that you are probably all used to seeing here already. Also I’ll try to not bore everyone and throw in something random every now and then (See Above lol)
