The Yukan Podcast, episode 1
Bet you thought it wasn’t gonna happen! Well, sorry.
Can it live up to the wait? Never! I finally managed to get about eleven hours of source material down to a barely-listenable half hour. Here’s my notes:
Intro: The real otou-san speaks
Opening theme: “I Think I Can,” The Pillows, from FLCL. Get it? I think YU KAN!
2:40 - Jumping right into the conversation, because the first part was awkward and rough, and not in a really interesting way either.
4:00 – To all you “gentleman bloggers” (as Riex calls you), I actually DO want to have you on.
5:00 - Baka-Raptor enters True Otakudom with Evangelion
7:41 - bad edit, but here’s where it gets… good?
22:00 - Uh oh. The P-word.
23:22 - “She’s Seven!” Isn’t that the point? What does a seven-year-old know?

Despite how craptastic kure-nai was, I still loved it. I gave it an 8/10 because Tamaki looked delicious.
It’s a shame that the show was only 11 episodes long.
Oh, and I wanted to bash my head on the keyboard with that song in the background during the kure-nai discussion.

It is important to work on the music to voice transition. The music is loud but the voices are quiet. They need to be the same level.
You also need a sultry european woman’s voice giving a review on an anime/OVA. It would add to the flavour. *hint*

Thanks to everyone for listening, and many many thanks for the words of praise and/or criticism. Here’s the deal:
1. I hope to do another one soon, with less time between. Those of you who said kind things, this knowledge will probably make you reconsider
2. We’ll try to get Omisyth on, or at least someone with a non-American accent.
3. I’ll be poring over my list of potential guests from emails and comments on that first post, using a complex algorithm of feasibility, perceived interest level, order in which you shouted at me, and whatever else I feel like. I actually am considering putting a poll or post up to see who YOU think we should have on next, dunno…
4. Mission One is to minimize awkwardness!. We are 100% amateur here, but it should get better. In the words of the mighty About page:

Hey, I’m Scots-Irish, so does that count?
Ahem. *show pony’s myself* xD I have a diluted dutch and Geordie (northern England) accent. I am originally from the States but I’ve spent several years here in Europe. Those who are not tuned to the differences in Scottish, British and Irish accents confused me as all of them here in the Netherlands. Oh yeah and I am a woman for those who don’t know of the title of my blog.
However, with that all said, I become flustered when speaking in public so to be honest, I would never be a good candidate. Omisyth very well might be seeing as (afaik) he is British. Everybody loves that accent except for the British themselves!
But do consider me for writing blog stuff potential in the future!
Just thinking… know what would be cool?! If people voted in a person for the next pod cast based off a voice clip.

@blissmo: My accent is the accent of the world. It doesn’t really come from anywhere, my heritage is Scots-Irish, but my accent varies from casual Aussie to mixed Scot/Irish to what Neil Gaiman’s voice sounds like when I’m feeling confident. Try a few of his audiobooks, and you’ll see what I mean.

I loled at the Osaka X Otou-san dialogue, and I have one question concerning that. I remember posting the youtube vid of that same scene on Sea Slug’s Father’s Day post, and remember you replying something along the lines of
I love Jesus159159159“I love that scene”. Did my vid posting have any influence on the decision of the opening dialogue, or were you planning to use that scene all along? =3Man, I totally thought you would sound alot older (read: old), but you sound like your 18-20 year old! Its actually pretty sexy if I do say so myself! But yea, thats the only compliment you’re getting, TIME TO BASH THE POD!!!
One thing I’d like to point out is the use of “I Think I Can” for the second half of the opening. Very nice pun with the whole “can” thing, but you probably should have shortened that song. Don’t get me wrong, its a great song, but by playing so much of it, I’m thinking, “okay, when is this gonna start?” and by the end of the song/where you cut it off, some might think (and I know I did), “Aw man, now I want to listen to the whole song!”, so I actually went to play that song. If it were another listener, they could have forgotten all about the podcast and just jam to some Pillows music. Very risky, especially this being the first podcast, but of course you gotta get used to da ropes! *Otou-san proceeds to commit suicide* NO NO! NOT THAT ROPE! *ba dum psh* (sorry, had to do it). If you’re gonna use that song again, just use the part in between 00:36-1:00. Sure, for someone who knows japanese, the words might seem cut off and incomplete, but it doesn’t really matter, since most here don’t know japanese! =3 Take Baka-Raptors intro as a guide. It was a kick-ass intro, and it kept things short and simple.
Also, yea, like most said, it did sound pretty awkward at times, but the most awkward (this is probably what everyone means by awkward) are the “Awkward Silence” parts, which lasted about 1-3 seconds in between speakers. It could be that the mic lagged for the other speakers (like, not hearing what the other said until 2-3 seconds later), but I’m pretty sure you can edit that abit. I think once you get used to it though, this will fade away =3
Another thing that others mentioned was the sound. With the intros (and I hate when other people, like IGN and Game Trailers, do this), they blast the intro music and when the content finally starts, all we hear is this very low-volume voice, making us raise the volume. And the worst part is when towards the end when the podcasting is done, they introduce the same high volume sound, making us lower the volume again! Its back and forth with adjusting the volume! Keep it near the same level.
Oh, but one thing that should never be around the same level is the background music (ex: the Kurenai singing song). While that was playing, all I could pay attention to was the song (especially at that high pitched part). I was like, “whaa did he say here yo?”. What I’m trying to say is that its very hard to separate the voices of the japanese singers and the english speaking podcasters, so stick with instrumental-only (hint: karaoke ver) songs. And of course, never make that music overpower you! We want to hear those sexy voices!
Hmm, probably the only other advice I can give you is that when you have an audience, never let it go (DON’T BE LAZY!!!). I learned that the hard way!
Oh, and for the actual content… it was like, ALMOST ALL KURENAI!!! but thats okay, cause Kurenai was a bitchin’ series!… and you definitely need that bitch-slapping scene posted here! Its a must! =3

I finally got around to listening to this. My only real complaint is the fact that there was that annoying song all through the Kure-nai portion, but other than that it was ok. Hope another one is in the works.
