Macross Frontier – 19: And Sheryl Claims the Gold Medal!
Bow before Sheryl.
Just when we all thought Ranka had everything Sheryl once possessed, the ending of this episode left me shattered. Ranka finds Sheryl in Alto’s arms after her live concert, and anyone would instantly suspect that the two are finally together — that Alto has accepted Sheryl’s love and thus returned it. In any case, I don’t think this is so; Sheryl had probably just informed him of her sickness and he was there to comfort her. From the preview, I’m also assuming that Alto’s going to tell Ranka what actually happened, or that he had chosen her over Sheryl instead. On the other hand, the latter seems highly unlikely; Alto seems too kind-hearted and considerate of a person to choose between two of his closest friends, and I’ll be damned if it turns out that he picked Sheryl over Ranka.
Apparently Ai is a Vajra larva (or is it larvae? Can’t remember) that’s not supposed to be on Macross, and if it’s that big golden-coloured creature which was standing behind the crowd of Ranka’s fans, I am truly disappointed. I wouldn’t mind an enlarged version of green-squishy Ai – at least Ranka and Brera would have had better luck locating it then. Speaking of which, Brera and Ranka seem to have become extremely closer in this episode as siblings, which was really nice to see because we learn a little bit more about Brera. If this sort of thing can keep up, hopefully Martin will come to find him un-annoying as well. I’m hoping that whatever Leon and Grace have planned for Ranka, it’s not something that will cost someone’s life besides Ozma. Admittedly, I’m still quite upset that Ozma survived in the seventeenth episode — there had just been so many signs implying his death.
Moving along, I can understand why some people might find Ranka rather detestable despite how cute she is — I just couldn’t stand those minutes of her giggling over Brera’s surprise of a cat leaping at him. Ranka’s as fragile as glass – as seen in the preview she collapses after seeing Alto and Sheryl together – while Sheryl seems to be a lot stronger, which is why it’d be more epic to see her die soon. Not that I hate her; Sheryl’s actually a really memorable character because of her audacious and flirtatious persona. Anyway, it’s too early to make predictions about the characters’ death, so I’m just hoping that whatever takes place in the next episode doesn’t result with Ranka in tears.
PS. More Brera screen-time, please?
Wow, I guess ladies really do like Brera’s chest-cutaway outfit! I don’t think that Ai-kun is the small version of those large Vajra, because when they hatched they already looked all big and buggy (instead of small and furry).

More Brera screen time? Surely you jest comrade, for the longer that Brerea draws breath the longer he will prevent Ranka from bridging the widening gap between her and Alto-hime. We need more Alto-hime time and less Brera. I hope Ai-kun eats Brera.
I honestly don’t like Sheryl because she has the same name of someone I hate in real life XD…

Anyway, i vote for Ranka. Even if Ranka suddenly goes for a slump, it doesn’t matter since she is just new and she would be still in the market. If ever Sheryl would be back on foot, then good for her. It just bugs me that Alto would have to choose one of them. I hated Sheryl ever since I saw her but now I knew her situation… I just can’t hate her.

Well, they each have their own charms and I like them both. Although, I prefer Sheryl over Ranka by the tiniest bit.
I think that Sheryl collapsed, more like it. The shot of her on the rooftop seems to suggest that much more than a hug.
My money is on Sheryl not having told Alto yet about her illness, and that Ranka’s timely interruption causes her to rethink telling him.

Yeah Sheryl has not exactly ‘won’ Alton over to her side, it should be just a misunderstanding. As for Brera, he might seem annoying to people because he is not really an expert in social dynamics and that makes him seemingly self-centred. But with his interaction with Ranka, I think he is starting to get used to handling human relationships. Maybe he will be an important ally to Alto in the future?
That said, I am still rooting for Sheryl. Not that I dislike Ranka, she is also great. And muhwahahaha…. My predictions are coming true! Ranka is going to be lured to the dark side!

Hehe, this reminds me of my first viewing of this episode, which was a bit hazy (early hours of sunday morning, very drunk with friends). Needless to say I’ll rewatch it tonight.
I love the way that Macross plays around with your feelings for each character – I’ve been thinking “poor Sheryl!” for several episodes now, but not even an It’s-not-what-it-looks-like scene could stop me feeling sorry for Ranka at this point. It’s a good lead-up episode, which promises great things for the final five or so instalments; I’m wondering about what little Ai really is though.
And yeah, I’m sure I’ll warm to Brera as I did with all the others as more is revealed about his personality. You never know, he could be related to Ranka in some way…I’m expecting a lot of connections between them all by the end, giving a fantastic “Ah, now I see!” feeling.
Was watching Macross 7 to do some Macross history catchups, really starting to see a pattern here…
And I surmise when you’re a young girl who’s fallen for a spacefaring bishonen, seeing your competition “net” your <3, yeah, that would suck.

I dont really like her character all that much I mean sure it makes it more interesting having her around but I think in the end she’s going to die anyway so LONG LIVE ALOTXRANKA
