The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones – You Will Love It
Hmm, stuff the review, here’s what’s so good about it.
Until another episode of Ga-Rei -zero- or SOUL EATER comes out, I’ve got nothing else to blog and I would draw up another bunny comic if I didn’t have so much homework and wasn’t born to be so darn lazy, but I became motivated to write about Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones when Kairu wrote an article on Twilight. Bookworm or not, I really enjoyed reading City of Bones, especially since it showed that short people can kick butt. Jokes aside, the cast of characters is terrific: they all have a wonderful sense of humour. And what’s more, you can easily imagine this book as an anime.
Summary: City of Bones is an urban fantasy novel based in modern Manhattan, New York, where a young girl called Clary Fray discovers a secret world within the world she’s always known. When she witnesses a murder take place in a night club which no one else can she, Clary is suddenly pulled into a war against a sadistic man known as Valentine, whose death supposedly took place years ago. But now he’s risen and he’s after one of the Mortal Instruments the Angel handed down: the Mortal Cup. Once Clary’s mother is kidnapped, Clary uncovers secrets about herself that she never knew about. Oblivious of the intimate feelings her best friend holds for her, Clary finds herself easily captivated by the charms of a Shadowhunter boy called Jace, but this relationship is when the real trouble begins.
Above: Fan trailer of cast. I know what Twilight fans are thinking: the forbidden love sounds awfully familiar, but City of Bones concentrates more on the development of each character and the plot rather than the love-triangle between Clary, Jace and Simon (Clary’s best friend). One of the great things about this book is that it’s actually very funny, and I’m certain that everyone who plans on reading this will get a good laugh out of it. I don’t want to spoil anything that happens like I “accidentally” did for Riex when I told him about Peter Petrelli’s special ability from Heroes, but basically, City of Bones is so twisted and unexpected that you just can’t predict what will happen next. Choux admitted that this story “felt too generic fantasy-ish“, and in fact, it is, very. If you try to imagine the Forsaken (Valentine’s fugly cronies) and demons described in the book, then they don’t look cool at all, but regardless, at least the characters are “hawt hawt HAWT” and “cool cool COOL”.
Extra Info: Currently two books have been released: City of Bones, and City of Ashes (which is even better and more twisted than the first one, so ha!). The third and last book of the series, City of Glass will be published next year in March. Since Clare knows that this should be enough and that the Mortal Instruments need not be stretched any further, she’s starting a whole new series which still revolves around the Shadowhunter world from 2010 and onwards, called Infernal Devices. So this is like Twilight too eh? After reading the summary, I think this book is worth reading after all. I hope there’s not too much romance in the book though.
“One of the great things about this book is that it’s actually very funny..”
Wow. So theres ‘humor’ in this book? This keeps getting better and better.
I liked the TV series, Heroes too. Cause im a fan of superpowers, fantasy-ish books/movies whatsoever.
“..at least the characters are “hawt hawt HAWT” and “cool cool COOL”.”
Another thing I like in books too is the characters. So yes as you have said, they are cool. But I dont care if they’re hot or not. XD
One thing I hate in a book.. It has sequels. I prefer only one installment. So City of Bones has its sequel!? Oh I see..
I’ll probably check this book in bookstores. Maybe tomorrow since we have no school
And Ill tell this to my friends. And recommend it to them
Hell, if you’d have spoiled me about Heroes, I would’ve left this blog. Like, permanently.
I don’t read books because I am a heterosexual.
[...] school than anything else, or I’d enjoy it more. At the very least, The Aeneid is better than City of Bones and Twilight. They don’t have a giant traptastic wooden horse or a utopian [...]
@21st Century Digital Boy: I dont get it.
I actually read the first book, I still haven’t finished the second but I can stay with happiness that I enjoyed the first and this review makes me want to go finish the second one.
I agree the characters and jokes are really well done. I love the scene in the second book between Simon and Clary where their talking about anime characters, and their watching it with Chinese subtitles.
Imagining books/novels as anime is the best. I might try this one since you’re very good at recommending ^_^.
@Mr.K: I’m gonna call you Mr. K from now on, alright?
Anyway, I don’t really like sequels either, but that never stopped me loving Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, or this book for that matter. Can’t wait ’til you read it though!
@Omisyth: Haha, I love spoilers, and being the spoiler!!
2cdb: Why am I not surprised?
@Maura: You NEED to read the second book and finish it NOW! It is THAT awesome
@kanzeon: Aww, you fluster me
@cant think of a nickname (blissmo-sama): Mr. K? Oh sure whatever you like. But why do you want a nickname for me like ‘that’?
Anyways, Yes. I really hate sequels but I really liked the HP books even though it has like 7 installments.
Stupid me. I forgot to go to the bookstores.
@Mr.K: Your alias is too long to type! XD
@blissmo-sama: Haha I see.
Agree!! City of Bones is a great book. The Mortal Instruments rock and honestly I like it better than twilight as the characters just seem more real with the descriptions and the things you learn about them as you read. More human even if they are not. I find it so much more funny and in touch with the real current world than any other book I’ve read and yet it maintains that trait of fantasy that captures you so easily. Sorry twilight fans, but I prefer City of Bones anyday.
i cant describe how good this book is… i am a huge twilight fan but this book is so much better, some people are very critical about it . but trust me its amazzing!!
better than twilight!
it is a book you wish you could be in. read all three they are great
Not kidding here people. but. this book is INCREDIBLE
I LOVE IT WAY TOO MUCH. I liked twilight alot, but this blew it out of the water, you have to read it, it really is nothing like Twilight…
In fact horrofied, that it isnt real. I dont think i could deal with my love for Jace if he existed though, he is amazing
haha!
Im absolutely gutted it dont exist.
and i actually find myself laughing out loud at times as its so funny at parts. Im only comparing to Twilight here because everyone else has on this page. But its nothing like it, Twilight wasnt the first forbidden love story ever to be written, its really very famous atm. BUT THIS BOOK IS AMAZING, my favourite books ever in the universe
this is nothing like twilight!!! these books are amazing! almost better than harry potter! twilight is crap. its written like crap and everything in it is crap!!!!!! read the mortal instruments trilogy!!
i’ve only read the first in the trilogy so no spoilers please.
i’m confused about how mr.wayland was jace’s fake father. valentine said he fled with jace under mr.wayland’s identity and that mr.wayland died in the uprising, but then who did jace witness being murdered by pangborn and blackwell?
can somebody help me understand this by telling my this part of the story?
